Even taking into account that it cost more to operate a business in the larger cities, it would appear there could be something wrong with gas pricing in North Carolina.
A difference of $0.50 per gallon from Asheboro to Raleigh seems to be too much. Even with increased cost of doing business in Raleigh, the offset is that the average station in Raleigh or Charlotte will pump quite a few more gallons per pump.
What do you think - - where is the disconnect.

NC has more miles of road than those states, too. Plus taxation is equal statewide. Retail prices are set by region based upon income demographics for the region. Recently this has diminished somewhat with companies simply opting to charge top dollar everywhere. I drive all over the state for work and there are fewer and smaller differences in price than there used to be. For example gas used to be 20 to 25 cents less per gallon in Roxboro than in the triangle (a big percentage difference when gas was $1.39), last time I compared it was less than 5 cents.

There was McCain's idea of a gas tax moratorium this summer, which was a great idea. I would have loved to see them try to put back ALL the TAX come September. We could have knocked it down some.
I was shocked at how many people didn't want half-a-buck off their gas during the busy summer.
When is it a bad idea to have tax relief?
When does getting to KEEP YOUR MONEY not seem a good idea?
I personally think part of the solution is to stop the mad building of more and wider highways. The investment in roads has served us in the past, economically, but will sink us in the future. It's sinking us now. Roads were built on $3 to $12 a barrel gas prices, and US production being a high percentage.
The Gov lives by taking our taxes, & rarely gives up anything they get back to the people.
