band of brothers

Published Jul. 18, 2008

Just completed tonight the WW2/ HBO saga on DVD. It was so moving, and of course I teared up. While I am watching my big screen TV, those modern day soldiers are laying in the sand tonight, far away from their loved ones.  I don't like this war, but may we all bless the soldiers...excuse me, OUR soldiers...jack

Thank you for saying"our" that is the change needed. My dad was in WW2 with Mcarthur. In fact I have a picture of him carrying his rain coat during the beach head of Mortori Island. My mom was a drill/1sgt for the womens army corp during the Korean conflict. It was much different attitude back then. My husband and two sons are in now.Our middle son was wounded in Afghanistan four times. His unit has lost 42 guys in 15 months.Infact the nine guys who were run over in the Wanat were from c company and Brian from D company. One of the guys who died was Pruitt Rainey. Brian was with him from Basic training on. Brian is back here haveing his arm rebuilt and morning the deaths of Nine friends. My husbands unit lost six guys so far. I have never felt so numb as I do going to the memorial services. Our oldest son is suppossed to go over to a war zone in the fall sometime. If I didnt have a deep abiding faith in God I dont see how I could make it. Thanks again for caring.Steph

GoldenLvr I do not have any one at risk at this time. I have been at risk myself in a prior war, and I have had family at risk in prior wars as well. I am not for even a moment trying to suggest that there is not great risk for your son if he goes to Iraq or Afghanistan. If he does go, I pray that he will return to you safe and sound, unharmed both physically and mentally. You got on another poster for expressing a sentiment that was indeed a correct sentiment. For many of our troops today, they are able to communicate directly with family, something that was not possible for the average soldier in prior wars. While it does not make what they are doing any easier or less risky, it does bring a small comfort to family and I hope to the troops.

chick...the "concentration" camp scenes were a shocker, even to the US soldiers...they obviously had no idea, nor did the world until afterwards. Some of the earlier episodes had alot of violent death, the last couple had almost none. It is a shameful for me that I had to learn about this history thru what was basically a TV mini-series. Todays kids, don't have a clue.

Great series,I wish Americans had the backbone now that they had back then.

The part where they discovered the concentration camp killed me. I cried a long time after watching that scene. Great series on WWII. My grandpa was in the Philippines and I wish I had been interested in his history before he died 16 years ago. Sigh....

Yeah, the IED's were much worse in WWII, the rocket propelled grenades were worse, the knowing what your enemy looks like was much worse. And, WWII was a war. It had the FULL support of the American people, the Congress, and the President. The US sacrificed for the war effort. The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan do NOT enjoy that support. They do enjoy those high tech body bags. How many kids do you have in Irag?

Hmm well maybe being transported through submarine infested waters in a slow moving ship wasn't any harder than being transported by aircraft. Maybe having the high-tech weapons our troops have today does not raise the odds of survival. Maybe climbing up the side of a cliff on the beach, or being shelled as your piggy little landing craft headed towards the beach, was not dangerous at all during WWII. Over five years of war now and yes over four thousand killed and many thousands wounded. A terrible price (even one life is a terrible price). But the odds of survival for our troops, is better than it was in Vietnam, and far better than it was in WWII, or Korea for that matter. Last but not least, the medical care available in theater is vastly improved over prior wars. Perhaps this is the sentiment that was being expressed.

Faith of our Fathers. Can't remember if I've seen it or not. Sounds worthwhile. You say it entails John McCain's history? So is it Vietnam or what? Is it available on DVD? I'd love to have it. My Dad was in the D-day invasion. He was one of the only Chaplins in the first invasions. He would tear up when telling the stories of the men, and would tell horrific stories of caring for the dead. I served in Vietnam, but never saw (for myself) the kind of carnage that he described. War....What is it good for? Absolutely nothing!

They had it so hard back then as compared to our soldiers today

As a father who has a son about to enter the Marine Corp and will probably end up in Irag.... I have to agree. Getting killed is so much more fun than it used to be.

Jack, no the reason I was asking was because my brother was talking about something like this movie or documentary ? He had basically the same reaction you did...He too was moved by what he saw...He's no wuss either...Mel ? ppfftt
