brides to be: how much is too much to pay for a wedding gown?

by Golo Managing Editor

If Money is no object, then this might not be the blog for you. But if like most people, you're planning your wedding with some sort of budget in mind, how much is too much to pay for a wedding gown?

Maybe there is no price limit for that dress you'likely wear for less than 12 hours or maybe you're waiting to knock down the doors of Filene's Basement for that huge annual bridal gown sale.

Whatever the case, share your thoughts. How much is too much?

Go to Bridal Mart in Greensboro. they have good service and great prices. But be warned...take a day off of work and go during the week and as soon as it opens! Or there will be crowds. I got my gown and veil there and was very satisfied.

Oh, and don't completely write off buying a used gown. It's only been worn ONCE so it can't be that heavily used.

if i were you and if i could do mine all over again i would go find me a nice white prom dress, ya know, one thats classy and elegant, but i mean. i spent 900 dollars on my gown, and i cant wear it again, that was it. looking back i wish i had kept the funds for something more useful. if i had that 900 now? sheeesh! you can be creative and budget and have a great wedding, use your imagination! you can get champaign glasses at the dollar store and go to a craft store and frost your own initials or whatever you like on them....you can make things affordable and special, and if a friend gets married and sees you did a good job, you might can make some extra cash on the side doing small stuff for other peoples wedding....never know! good luck! furthermore, be SURE the husband and wife are the right fits before the dresses and details ;)

Marriage ceremonies are a waste of money, because the real marriage begins AFTER the ceremony once you realize that he always leaves the toilet seat up and she always f arts in the sleep. So,why spend all the money just to whp up female ego, show off or just because everyone else is doing it?Thats why they designed courthouse marriages for the people with commonsense.

Before we made our plans, I read a book that explained the "traps" that many in the bridal industry set up for brides to be. Flowers were one area that sucked up money quickly. Daisies and carnations are less expensive. My sister-in-law is the Martha Stewart type, and used fruits and vegetables to make her own center pieces; sounds ugly but they were gorgeous.

With some research you can stretch your dollars easily.

It is more than possible to do a wedding for less than 6k. You just have to figure out what is important to you and splurge on that. Budget the rest of your items or cut them out.

We got married almost 2 years ago and our biggest expense was photography. We spent about 1500 on pictures- bridal portrait, formal shots of the wedding party and candid shots of the wedding and reception. Flowers and candlebras came to about $800. My dress was less than $500 (at David's Bridal), the tuxes were less than $100 to rent. A friend of the family made the bridesmaids gowns and only charged for materials. The church was free and it was about $100 to rent the lodge in town for the reception. My aunt made the wedding cake. We spent between $4000 and $4500 on the whole wedding and reception. It wasn't very important to me to do the whole blow bubbles and ride away in a limo thing so we didn't put our money into it.

The date isn't set in stone yet but a date that's special to us falls on a Thursday in April. Good to know that could help keep down costs!

scarecrow -- Having our wedding on a Friday night cut down expenses a great deal. We paid 50% less for our DJ as well as for the room we rented at a local hotel. I don't know if this is still true, today, but it is worth checking out.

And by the way, do you folks who've been married already think it would be possible to do a no frills wedding for about $6,000? That's all I'd want to spend because even though our families are going to foot the bill it's not like they're made of cash anymore than we are. Planning for about 100 guests (just family and a handful of close friends), catered food from a restaurant like Sweet Tomatoes. I know there's lots of little costs here and there that add up but I just can't figure out how the average wedding costs $28,000.

I'm not planning to spend more than $500. I'm not much into cermonies (I didn't go to my high school or college graduation ceremonies. I picked up the diplomas afterwards.) so my boyfriend and I aren't likely to spend very much at all. As long as I have some nice flowers I really couldn't care less about the rest of the details.
