q&a with ira david wood iii | starring in nct's 'peter pan'
Published Jul. 18, 2008If you haven't yet seen North Carolina Theatre's production of Peter Pan, then you need to get downtown to Raleigh's Memorial Auditorium before it's over.
Well known and loved by Triangle audiences for his cranky character, Ebenezer Scrooge, in Theatre In The Park's annual production of A Christmas Carol, it's always exciting to see David's interpretation of a rich character.
I sat down and talked to him about Captain Hook, his current villainous character. What a card, that Captain Hook.

What’s your favorite character of all time?
Cyrano de Bergerac
Why do you act? How important are the arts?
Acting is a lot better than paying a shrink $200 an hour. The Arts elevate the soul of Man.
Do you prefer playing villains or heroes?
Preference for villains. Whatever the character, it's much better if the character is flawed.
How do you prepare for a role?
Quick skim the script to see what jumps from the page at me. First impressions are extremely important and usually correct.
Is it hard to remember your lines, particularly when you’ve got several scripts a year to memorize?
Some scripts are harder than others. Oddly enough, it's not the long monologues that are difficult; it's those short sentences sprinkled through a script that are difficult. Repetition and blocking are the keys to memorization for me.
Ever had an interesting situation when you’ve forgotten your lines? What did you do?
Forgetting lines isn't as scary as forgetting fight choreography when you and someone else on the stage is flashing away with a sword.
What’s your favorite play? Favorite novel? Favorite movie?
Cyrano de Bergerac. The Glory And The Dream. Gone With The Wind.
Did you ever think you’d have such a prolific, successful career on stage?
I'm a great believer in the saying: "When work and talent join together, expect a miracle." I'm one of the luckiest people I know.
If you weren’t an actor, what would you be doing?
Trying to figure out how to get out of a straight jacket.
Do you get to keep Captain Hook’s costume?
No. It has to go back to the Liberace Museum.

I wish you would conduct in-depth interview with him about his thoughts on the JFK assassination.
