teachers: here's your mission. can it be met?
by Golo Managing EditorPublished Jul. 16, 2008
I spent some time on the WCPSS website today and came across this:
Mission:
The Wake County Public School System will educate each student to be a responsible and productive citizen who can effectively manage future challenges.
Now, based on some of the comments and topics/issues discussed in the blogs over the last few days: (parental apathy, kids with bad manners who are not disciplined at home, lack of support, parents who believe kids can do no wrong, etc...) is this an attainable goal?
Teachers: Is this mission something you think about daily?
Share your thoughts.

Not many, I am sorry to say. These are expectations we have of children. How difficult would it be for adults to set examples rather than just telling children to talk one way while adults talk another? If we got back to the basics in manners and respect, then maybe this world would be a much better place.

"What is my role and the parents role in today's society when educating young minds?"
My role as a teacher is to teach academics. But at the same time, it is my responsibility to also have upstanding morals, give respect, and work collaborately with the parents while educating their children. All I see are excuses about "who's" responsibility it is to do what job and when. If I want Tyrone to use polite words, then I use them first. If I want Tyrone to respect me, then I respect him first. If this is the mission within my classroom then it is my responsibility to inform the parents of my techniques and ensure we are all on the same page. I can not imagine ONE teacher not taking seriously his/her responsibility to provide opportunites for their students to learn respect and how to be productive citizens.
