clothing advice - please!

by MrsTaz
Published Jul. 16, 2008

My 30th high school reunion is this weekend (geesh, I'm old), and I got an e-mail reminding me that dress is "Hawaiian casual".  Since I have no idea what in the hail that means, nor am I going to wear a grass skirt and coconut shell bra, I am need of some guidance.

I've got a long flowy floral dress, a long floral sundress, a short floral dress (notice a theme?) - or should I just wear a pair of linen shorts and a blouse or polo?

I'm not dressing to impress (ok - maybe I am a little) but I don't want to stick out like a sore thumb.  Any help will be appreciated!

sounds good, taz...have fun @ the reunion!

Ladies, thank you!

It is indoors, but on the water. Based on the advice to wear what I feel best in, I'm leaning towards the short dress because a) it goes best with the adorable white patent leather flip flops I just bought and b) my legs look better now than they did when I was 18 (all those years of wearing heels paid off).

having lived in Hawaii for some time, Hawaiian casual is very just casual. But if it were me, I'd go with the floral dress and a lei would be a great touch but not a one of those plastic ones, if you can get by without. Call a florist and have them make you a real one. Then you will be an authentic Hawaiian babe. When hubby wakes up (book is under my bed) I'll post some hawaiian sayings so you can sound authentic, too. I know how to say them, I just don't know how to spell them!

no polo either

***please dont wear shorts-too casual***

wear the dress that looks the best on you-you dont want to look cheezy or look like youre actully going to the beach. i like the flower in your hair idea, too. i would wear some dressed up flip flops with a wedge heel or some flat sandals that are metallic or a color that matches your dress. hair down. straw bag.

Agree with Bronzegoddess....inside or outside would make the choice for me. And don't forget the lei for your beautiful neck. Aloha!

Wear whichever dress makes you feel the prettiest-the confidence you feel from looking great will make getting through the evening easier. Be prepared to see some old-looking people, and when you slip off to the ladies room you can look in the mirror and snicker because you look so young.

I would say that it depends on the venue. Will it be outside? Is it during the day or in the evening. I, like Bronze, would suggest either of the sundresses and perhaps carry a wrap with you.

Hmmmm Hawaiian casual, I think since you are trying to make an impression, I would wear either the short or long flowing floral sundress and I would wear a flower in my hair. Just my thoughts. Does this help you?
