half vs whole?
Published Jul. 16, 2008Good morning GOLO, I thought I would ask your opinion of something that I have been thinking about. Last week I had a conversation with my friend and we somehow got on the subject of sisters. Me and my sister dont have the same father. But my father took care of both of us and he was there for my sister since what seems like the day she was born. Her dad was never in her life and when he was he made brief appearances here and there. Then my friend she said well your sister is your HALF sister? I have never thought of such since we were raised in the same house, same mom, lived in the same home under the same roof. What the heck is a "HALF" sister? Either she is my sister or she isnt. We never used that word in our home. Why do people use the term? Does it matter if two siblings dont share the same mom or dad? Are they less than a sibling who does? I dont get it? Did this blog make any sense? LOL.

I have three brothers of the same mother but different father. Their father was the only Dad that I have ever known. The idea of them being half-brothers never entered the picture until I got old enough to realize that I don't look like them (They are bi-racial and I'm white). My sister (which would actually be a step-sister) is as close to me as if we were of the same parents.
Families are unique and dynamic. There is no one-size-fits-all model.

excellent point djofraleigh..I never thought to say half. I just say sister. It is my natural instinct to say that. I guess it is whatever makes that person comfortable. The thought NEVER crossed my mind untl the conversation with my friend. Thanks for your feedback.

These are technical descriptors, and don't need to be used in most cases. IF you were introducing your sister to someone in front her natural father, you would say, this is my step-sister and her father, so as to not suggest he is also your father. There, the term is handy.
IF I were introducing or referring to one of my half-sisters to a friend, I would say SISTER, since the exact relationship would not matter.
YOU determine what you call someone, and what people can call you. You can correct people who would do otherwise. IF you have a person trying to inject HALF for no good reason, then you know they are trying to cut someone out. Don't let them.
There is a time to point out the TECHNICAL aspect of your relationship, and a time NOT to be technical, and most times, you are going ot use the familiar word, sister.

They are already seperated b4 birth! Unless of course they are never told they have different parents. And that would be a shame. My step daughter wants people to know who here Dad and Mom is,and she also includes me to be her step-mom what's the big deal>Oh,I forgot I am just going to sit back and mourn myself to death because "I feel left out"...PPPFFFTTTT My kids don't care about being called step. They appreciate the fact that their step father recognizes who their real father is and doesn't try to take HIS spot.
