teachers: what is the biggest problem you face with today's parents?

by Golo Managing Editor

Alright teachers, let's hear it! What are today's parents doing that seems to be driving you nuts? Not all of us are model parents by any means, so give it to us straight.

We will talk about what parents are doing "right" in another blog. This is a space for you to tell it like it is.

Wordwitch--

You are exactly right. I teach in a very low income area, and most of my students have parents that are not highly educated. They do not attempt to control their children, but they expect me to be able to do so.

So many parents do not value education themselves and speak/act disrespectfully about school and teachers to their children. Why is it then any surprise when the children come to school and say and act disrespectfully. Modeling, it's all about the modeling.

In my day, if a student acted up at school, he/she would be punished there and get a second dose at home. Those days are mostly gone.

well I teach in an alternative enviroment, so my parents have lost control of their kids along time ago. My biggest issue is the parents who tell you they will handle it, and then you see the bahavior the next day. Alot of parents think they have influence over their kids, when really, they lost control a long time ago.

Exactly NCTeacher! And at 7 years old, they will rat on each other in a heart beat! I warn them at the beginning of the year, there are no secrets in second grade. Someone will see you or hear you and tattle on you. :)

When my son was in first grade, he had to stay inside for several days in a row because some of the kids were talking. I couldn't hold my tongue anymore. I told my son what I thought about it and what I'd do if I was the teacher. He promptly went back to school and said, "My mommy said..." I could have died! Learned to just mumble under my breath after that. I should have added that my son has never gotten in trouble at school, ever. He's almost like a Stepford child at school. He knows whatever punishment was at school is nothing compared to home. So, I hate when he doesn't get to play because of other students.

I don't really understand group punishments either. If alot of them are talking or enough that I can't single any of them out- I will have them sit back down and try it again. That is usually enough group punishment to be able to figure out who the problem ones are.

I posted my "teacher pet peeve" but I am also a parent. I sent my son to a different school so that he wouldn't have the "teacher's kid" label.

I absolutely HATE group punishment. I quiz my son every afternoon after he gets home from school. I want to know what he learned, how was lunch, what he played at playtime, everything. I do not accept a shrug of an answer either. What I found was when I asked him what he did at playtime, he'd say that they didn't go outside because so-and-so couldn't line up quietly. That makes me so mad.

Being a teacher, I punish the ones that get in trouble and never punish the class for a few. The ones that had a rough day have to walk laps. They can take a rest, but then have to walk more. This gives them punishment and exercise. Usually the last 10 or 5 minutes, I give them time to join the class. I teach 7 year olds, so some forgiveness is appropriate :) That's my parent pet peeve!

"My son has come home and said that a particlar class was wasted because someone was having a behavior issue. If it is mine, let me know. We will fix it."

I heard that alot from my 2 older sons when they were in middle school. It was like too many days the teachers were just happy to get through the day without any fights, forget the teaching. I understand how frustrating that has to be for the teachers. But I think the problem, in my particular middle school, goes back to the administration. My childre, because they come from a "good home", were punished quickly for the smallest of infractions (which they should be, don't get me wrong) but the ones that were a constant disruption were not because "you have to understand, they have a difficult life as it is"...teach them responsibility NOW, give the teachers the support they need to TEACH, and some of these problems will stop

So, the issues are:

Parent Involvement in School Parent Discipline at Home that carries over to school Teacher Pay

I think teachers should have more power to eliminate distractions from their classrooms. My son has come home and said that a particlar class was wasted because someone was having a behavior issue. If it is mine, let me know. We will fix it.

Teachers that are doing their jobs ARE underpaid. Others are overpaid for the job they do - no different from any other profession.

What about the testing ? I haven't seen any comments on that.

I think we are preaching to the choir. If I had teachers that do some of the things you teachers have posted, I would be pretty happy.

NOW,,,a parents pet peeve. My youngest is headed to middle school. I've already sent 2 through this school so I know of what I speak. If there were any other way for me to send him somewhere else, I would, but we will suffer through 3 years of this place. Not all of the teachers are bad. There are some wonderful teachers there. A lot of it is the head administration. She thinks she is GOD. She can not be talked to, reasoned with, and the second your opinion differs from hers, she threatens you with the sherriff and barring you from school property. Parents are not allowed past the front desk, for any reason. You are not allowed into your child's classroom. It is next to impossible to get to know the teachers. The way I work, this is difficult for me. BUT,,3 years and it's off to a great high school from a wonderful elementary school,,,so we deal.

I have to say that I have enjoyed reading these comments, from a parents perspective. And none of the teacher's comments surprise me because I am an active PTA member and an active parent. I had a parent tell me just this weekend that they were sick at the thought of having to put their child in a pucblic school because of the disinterest of teachers and staff. (her child has been in a private school for 2 years but hubby has now retired adn $$). I told her every school is what you make of it. GET INVOLVED. Know the child's teachers. Know the staff. Volunteer. If I can do it, everyone can. I work 55+ hours a week, go to school, have a family, and do volunteer work, but I also know my child's teachers and school staff by name. It takes time and effort. BUT IT PAYS OFF. When little Johnnie acts us or has a bad grade and the teacher knows you, they are more likely to take that extra minute to call you.
