internet crimes against children's blog

no good reason

Over the last year and a half I have given around 20-30 internet safety presentations.  These presentations are usually to kids 12-15 years old and around 25 - 30 kids in each presentation.  None of my presentations are exactly the same, but I do try to ask some questions of all the kids.  Mainly, "What social networking sites do you know?  Which ones are you a member of?" and "How many of you have a computer in your room with internet access?"

I ask these questions so that when I do presentations for parents or teachers I can ask, "What social networking sites do you know?  What social networking sites are your kids a member of?" and "How many of your kids have a computer with internet access in their rooms?"  As you can imagine, the answers usually do not match.

As parents you must educate yourselves as to what social networking sites are out there and what sites your kids use.  I do not think there is anyone out there that does not know what Myspace or Facebook are, but what if I said:

  1. Bebo - very popular with young teens
  2. BlackPlanet - catered to the black community
  3. Broadcaster - a site center around webcams (scary enough in itself)
  4. Xanga
  5. Multiply
  6. Stickam
  7. Orkut _ not very popular in the US, but owned by Google so it will be
  8. MiGente - catered to the latin community
  9. AsianAve - catered to the Asian community
  10. Friendster - one of the first
  11. hi5
  12. GLEE - G.ay L.esbian and E.veryone E.lse
  13. Second Life - a virtual world

And these are just a small number of the ones out there.  The reason I mention them is that I am just one man, it would be impossible for me to be at all these places.  I must rely on parents to be proactive in their child's internet life.

Now when I ask kids if they have a computer in their room I typically get 50 - 75% of kids saying they do.  When I ask a group of parents if their kids have computers in their rooms I might get one hand, maybe.  The typically excuse given by parents is, "You don't know my kid, he would never do anything bad on there." or "You don't know my kid, he couldn't live without it."  I usually tell them, "You're right, I don't know your kid, but I know the people who are looking for your kid.  They are tireless, constant, and merciless until they find your kid."

There is not a single good reason for a child to have a computer with internet access in their room.  Move the computer to a public space in your home.  If it is a laptop, lock it to something.  If you have a webcam, disable it.

Remember 1 in 25 children will receive an aggressive sexual solicitation online.

I don't think it's a matter of whether or not the kids are being good or bad. It's the fact that kids are very susceptible to suggestion. They don't have the maturity (typically) to filter what's being said. I think great kids can be manipulated, that's why we don't allow that here.

This is an excellent blog. Like I posted, I believe it was yesterday, my husband I have an ongoing argument over internet access in our boy's bedroom. The older 2 have computers but they do not have internet access. They can do their homework and such, but if they need internet access, they must use the computer that is in the common area of our home. My husband feels that our older 2 are smart, decent kids. I do too but all it takes is one slip. I also insist that I have acceess to all their accounts, email, myspace, facebook, etc. I walk past when they are online, just peek at what they are doing, ask who they are talking to. I just want to know that it is an actual live person that I can put a face to, a parent to, etc. If not, that person is blocked. Internet access is not taken away, but my children must be safe, as safe as I can make them. Sometimes, I feel like a bad parent, overprotective. I just don't want mine to be a statistic

We have 1 computer and when my kids are on it (about once every couple of weeks), I am watching. They go to disney or addictinggames. We tried (at the recommendation of a close friend) a site called matmice. It's supposed to be like myspace but for kids only. I allowed them to check it out, with me watching and also participating (I had their passwords, etc). It took all of 1 week before we closed accounts. I just don't think my kids need to be chatting online. If they want to talk to their friends, the telephone works just fine. And my kids don't have cell phones either (much to their distress, but I just don't see the point at this stage).

Yes keep it in an open space where everyone can see it. I also have spy tool that e-mails me a report of where they have gone and IM's also. It's a AOL feature that is free.

I appreciate the blogs too. My son's mistake was sure an eye opener for me. Your blogs help me, I hope mine will help someone too.

As a mom, I really appreciate your blogs. It keeps us as parents aware of what's going on.

Theses are great blogs!

Allpoetry.com is a popular site with my daughter and her friends...it is similar to Myspace and Facebook in that members can post a profile, blogs/poems, pics, "friend" one another, and exchange comments. I would imagine this would be a big site for teenagers as many like to write poetry and express themselves.

o i guess that would help and why to 12 to 15 yr olds..middle schoolers are on the net too...i am in avery county...very border with tn...its a real nice place to spend a few days...and i assure you our high sheriff would jump at the chance to let you make him look good lol

We have ONE computer...and it sites right next to the couch in the sofa in the living room...

The monitor is in a position where you just have to look over and see it. it is not facing straight out where you have to be standing over their shoulder to see what they are doing.
