Just got back around midnight last night from visiting our son at Camp Raven Knob near Mt. Airy. What an awesome camp! While taking a tour of the camp grounds with our son, it got me to thinking about the great experiences I had as a Girl Scout, and then later, Girl Scout co-leader thru the years. I remember the hiking, singing, late night giggling in tents, the outdoor showers  ~~burrr~~.  And of course the dreaded outdoor latrines. Pew.. During one campout the older sr. girls played a trick on the scout counselor by stealing a pair of her rather large bloomers and hanging them on the flag pole. Next morning when the troops all gathered around the flag to start the day, there was Miss Nancy's drawers waiting for a salute. Anyone else have any good/bad memories of camps? Doesn't have to be scouts, family camping can be just as adventerous.

*Do they still let you climb the knob? Yea, there were some guys, (not sure who) up there last night during the Order of the Arrow "tapout" ceremony..*hope I got that right...I'm kinda new to boy scouts. My son is suppose to climb to the knob this evening after dinner. They have a new amphitheatre that's just beautiful, stone seating that seats around 1,000.

Dayum

The mountain you are talking about is Pilot Mountain. Its also a beautiful place to visit!

I was a scout and went to raven knob evey year. I have fond memories and would love to go back there for a visit. Do they still let you climb the Knob?

is that the mountain that looks like a boobie?

glad ya had a good time........ LOVE that song!

Hello Muddah, hello Faddah

Here I am at camp Grenada

Camp is very entertaining

And they say we'll have some fun if it stops raining

I went to summer camp at Raven Knob as a scout several times. It was really a nice camp.

I've been to Camp Mary Atkinson several times, as well as Camp Grahm, and Mu Sha Ni which is very nice, espcially with the new lodge. Sorry to hear about the other BSA camps being in poor condition. You're right about Raven Knob being the best. There are scouts from Fl, NJ, and D.C. there this week. I know it must have cost a bit of change to drive all the way up here just for a week of camp.

I grew up camping - boy do I have some memories :-)

BTW, when I first saw this blog I thought it said: "Hello Mudda Fugga" and I was like ...WHAT??? LOL, whew, glad I read it wrong!

Raven Knob is a special BSA camp, easily the best in the state. Overall most of the BSA camps in the state are in poor shape, my son who is now a eagle scout has been to Camp Cherokee in Yanceville and Camp Durant in Carthage and neither are in good shape. They have started to spend $$ on Durant recently. My daughter spent 2 summers at Camp Ginger Cascades in Lenior and the facilities are amazing. Camp Mary Atkinson in Smithfield is also nice. My wife has been a leader for several years.

Now that I've gotten to experience Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts (with my son), I can tell you that girls are way cleaner than boys during camping. Girls will get up a hr. early just to shower and fix their hair and neaten their tent. Thought I was going to die when I saw the cabin my son's sharing with about 5 others. But they were happy with it. So who am I to complain the one day of the week I get to see him. I do plan on throwing his dirty hide in the shower when he gets home. (After a big hug of course)
