teachers: what do you love about your job?
by Golo Managing EditorPublished Jul. 9, 2008
Teachers of GOLO:
Is there any one thing you absolutely love about being a teacher? As a student, I often felt that my teachers were pleased when they knew, I mean knew 100% that I completely grasped a new concept. The look on a teacher's face when they know they're getting through to you, in my opinion...is priceless.
But back to you now, what makes teaching worth it?

I also find myself fully commiting my entire self into each and every child. I feel their pain when they come in upset because something happened at home or their dog died. I rejoice with them when something great has happened and see their excitement. They will always be *my* students no matter what grade they are in!

I was teaching the class that heavy things will sink to the bottom of a fluid and the lighter things will float to the top. So we got some jello and the children desolved it in hot water. They were so excited to see the color change and smell the lime flavoring. We added some mixed fruit to the jello and began to stir it up. I asked them to quit stirring and watch what happened. They began to get excited as the fruit sunk to the bottom of the jello. I asked, "Wow, did you see that? I wonder why the fruit sank to the bottom?" They replied all at once, "It must weigh too much to float." I was excited they got it on the first try. So, I looked outside at the swimming pool and asked, "If I pick up a rock and throw it into the water, what would happen?" One little boy began shouting, "Ohhh Ohh Mrs. Lynette call me I know." So I called him and he said, "It would sink." Proud of myself that he got the concept, I asked, "why?"

I can show a student anything, but until they know and trust me, I am talking at them instead of with them.
It is not the look in their eyes when they finally "get" something. It is the change that comes over them when they believe that they can learn anything that they do not already know.
That is what makes me get up every morning and deal with all the unpleasantries that come along with the job. Seeing the growth in each and every child and helping them to see that they can achieve greatness.
Someone once did that for me, and now, it is my turn to pay it forward to as many students as I can.

Another thing I love is to meet a student years later and have them tell you some moment that they remember. It's really special if they share something they learned from you that touched them in some way.
