Depends on the price and occasion. Capital City Chophouse for a great steak, Simpsons for great food and romantic atmosphere, the the Ale House for great eats and pool shooting. Of the chains, I like O'Charleys and Chiilis. 42 Street for seafood. Panera is good for light stuff. Assagios for Italian and el dorado for Mexican. Way more...the Raleigh area is a great restaurant area, except for BBQ !!

I'm only really qualified to speak on Italian food.

All around best? Two Guys on Hillsborough Street in Raleigh. I've been eating there since 1975 and they have the best spaghetti and meat sauce in the world.

For pizza only, though, I've got to go with Schiano's. You can shut your eyes, chomp down, and hear the Knicks playing in Madison Square Garden. True New York Pizza by the slice or whole pie.

Good food at huge volumes? Maggiano's in Durham at Southpoint.

Good food with great atmosphere? Casa Carbone in Oak Park Shopping Center on Glenwood.

Worst? Olive Garden. Smells like puke on cardboard and tastes even worse.

One exception, though, to the Italian rule...

The best restaurant in the world is Phillips Seafood in Washington DC. Full seafood buffet including crab legs, crab cakes, shrimp in twelve million varieties, and every other kind of seafood imaginable. All you can eat.

Bojangles.....duh.

DJM, I always take my partner to the Melting Pot :)

The Melting Pot is a treat. And Kanki for a show.

Capital City Chophouse....

melting pot is awesome - beer cheese and jalapenos.....i never make it to dessert

Cleo are you talking about Bosphorus in Cary?

KLD0805, that is the one! I love it :) I'm a huge fan of Mediterranean food.

I love Thai Lanna here of 55 in Durham. I love Thai food and it is prepared well and hot as you can stand it.

I also like Bali-Hai in Durham (Ninth St.) it is the best Mongolian grill.

Cosmic Cantina in Durham (just off ninth st) has the best burritos that I have ever had.

411 on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill has great food and the best artichoke dip appetizer.

Eggplant parm there is soooooo delicious!!!!!!

KEMP'S Seafood hwy 70

I would recommend Carvers Creek off Capital Blvd. We go there every year for our Anniversary, I love their Prime Rib.

Worst place any of the Golden Corrals...yuck!

RYoung, what about Thai in Cary? Anything good?

Depends on what they want:

My personal favorites?

The Big Easy (Cajun) Downtown Cafe Luna (Italian) - Downtown Holy Smokes (BBQ) - Garner Taverna Agora (Greek) - Glenwood Ave. Humble Pie - Tapas Style

Worst? Avoid: Olive Garden - that's not italian (YUK) Red Lobster - if you want fast food get it cheap, why pay $$$ for frozen fast food - you can go to a grocery store and get it cheaper and fresher Sono - Horrible service, taky reservation guidelines (will require a credit card and if your not ready to be seated? They won't seat you and will charge your card a fee) Garner Ale House - Bad food, Bad service

Steve Crisp "I'm only really qualified to speak on Italian food.

You know they just were sold a few months ago. The family that owned it still helps sometimes but the flavor is a bit different than it used to be. The Candes family owned it before then and they are all excellent cooks!

Ron's Barn for sea food all you can eat at a reasonable price or at my home for steaks.

Torreros is a great Mexican place in Downtown Durham and the Mellow Mushroom at American tobacco is very good pizza.

Cleo - I do not know cary very well. Sorry ....

Forgot

Best Mexican - Festejos on Main St in Clayton

I can answer the question with four restaurants: The Char-Grill(any location),Players Retreat(enough said),Amadeos(good as always), and Two Guys. In the Fall, the Nathans Hotdogs sold by Carolina Harmony on the concourse at Carter-Findley Stadium. Chinese food is best at China Garden in Garner beside the Garner Post Office. Since I don't live in Raleigh, I don't eat steak in Raleigh.

Also forgot

Pizza: Magic Mushroom or Amante's

VERY GOOD.

"El sombreo" in smithfield is by far the best mexican resturant, so i think :)

LOL Ops just say Ryoung posted it right. LOL I won't say what I was thinking LOL!!! It's Mellow Mushroom not "Magic" LOL

Mimis Cafe - Walnut Street, Cary

The Angus Barn, yeahhhhhhhhhh baby!

Wait! Didn't Two Guys close??? They have/had the best onion rings for half a light year in any direction.

Bandido's in Hillsborough has excellent Mexican chow including but not limited to the Margarita chicken.

Papa Mojo's Roadhouse on 55, just south of 40 has killer Cajun too.

Crooks Corner in Chapel Hill, outstanding... National recognition for their 'Shrimp and Grits'.

RYoung, boo! Cary has the dregs as far as restaurants go. Mostly chains, mostly carppy.

Casa Carbone has never let me down.

Royal India (although their vindaloo is just insulting).

Chili's, Olive Garden, Applebees and the like are all a tie for best marketing of second rate dog food. These places are for when you're too drunk to care.

American hero off North Roxburro Rd in Northern Durham. Nothing spectacular just inexpensive and they actually appreciate you business. Great subs and quite a selection of other stuff too.

Cleo - Let me tell ya - I have been impressed with the variety and style of many restaurants in Chapel Hill as well as Durham.

I have found some very pleasant surprises.

Foster's in Durham.....Fresh Mozzerella sandwiches!!!!!! OMG YUMMY!!!!

Daniel's on 55 in Apex -- best Italian around.

Daniels in Apex.

The Seafood place at the Farmer's Market.

Hey, T-man and I agree on something!

Amadeos - everyone said that was the place to eat if you are a Wolfpack fan. So, as a freshman, go there with my then boyfriend. We ordered a pizza and had leftovers so we requested a to-go box. The server set down the box and roaches spilled out all over the table. That was bad enough, but the reaction by the server and the manager was nonexistant. They pretty much just shrugged at the roaches crawling all over the place and asked if we still wanted our pizza. No apologies, no free meal, no nothing. I have never eaten there again.

Merlion Restaurant serves incredible Singapore food. This food is very similar to Thai. It is located in Southern Village in Chapel Hill.

OK - Ya'll keep talking about seafood.. and I've been to all the places listed.. but it's all fried (GROSS) - That's NOT the way to treat seafood!

42nd street is too overpriced and servings are meger and the service I had there (3times) was horrible. Tony's Oyster Bar was only subpar and I won't mention the hairs I found in my food there.

Where in the world do you get decent seafood that's NOT FRIED in NC that is reasonably priced (for seafood that is) and decent service??)

hawg wild in cary, o charleys

Tidbit, we don't call it "fried", we call it "Calabash". It sounds healthier.

Piper's Tavern. Best Shrimp and Grits! Pizza is pretty good too. The wife loves the stuffed flounder.

ROFL Skid - It's still fried... and for me it's gross. I know lots of people like it and that's all good. I'm from the Gulf region and frying it is a sin unless it's catfish (because that's the only way to make catfish taste good)

OMG I was going to BLOG something about the new place in Creedmoor/Butner off of I85 exit 191. It use to be the Waffle/Pancake House.

Taste of Fiji...serves both Japanese and American foods. Scott, Matthew, and I ate there last night and OMG it was GREAT!!! Scott and I had the dinner for 2 which was Shrimp, Steak, Scallops, and Chicken, with veggies and rice for just a little over $18. Matthew had Chicken Fingers and Fries...looked more like 2 chicken breasts and fries. FABULOUS!!! I highly recommend it!!!

Four Square on Chapel Hill Street in Durham for a romantic (expensive) evening. 411 in Chapel Hill has always been good. The Franklin Hotel in Chapel Hill has great breakfast. Mellow Mushroom and Tyler's Tap Room at American Tobacco is great, too. And I've always enjoyed Outback on 15-501.

I've always liked Amedeo's, although I sometimes it can get a little sketchy in there. If you like the taste of Amedeo's, but don't want to run the risk of the sketch factor, Amedeo's North on Falls is great. Also 2 Guys for pasta. Coopers for BBQ. Em R Wings in Apex for wings. Village Deli for lunch. Torreros for Mexican....

Rey's

http://www.reysrestaurant.com/

Great menu, exemplary service, and perfect romantic atmosphere.

Expensive enough to keep out the quantity-over-quality crowd, and IIRC, no kid's menu to discourage morons without the sense to hire a babysitter.

mellow mushroooooooooooom

oh and lily's pizza

I would bring my friend to Oxford and go to Freeman's. They have the best burgers in the world. There is no place like Freeman's. It is actually called Buyquick. The burgers are real and not processed with additives like burgers in fast food restaurants. It has a flavor that is not comparable to anywhere I know of and I have eaten a lot of burgers in my lifetime up and down the east coast and out west. NO COMPARISON!!

Two Guys and then to Mitch's to drink copious amounts of alcohol.
