awol - you should be ashamed

Published Jul. 8, 2008

When I was little I heard my Grandfathers talking little about what they did in WWII in the Pacific.  I heard a great more from my Grandmothers and their sisters though, they were each proud of their men and made sure we all knew how great their husbands and brothers are.  I remember them talking proudly about my Grandfathers and their brothers serving in the fight against Japan and Germany and I remember their distrust of Germans and Japanese.  I also remember how they would care for what they had because they learned valuable lessons during the rationing of fuel and rubber and foodstuffs during and shortly after the war.

What had the biggest impact on me, besides and expectation that I would also serve, was one of a united front with the entire family and Nation committed to victory.I also remember dads returning from Vietnam and the difference in the attitudes.  I was shocked.  Where was the support and respect?  How could someone able bodied NOT fight and contribute?  I didn't get it.  Even at an incredibly young age I was mortified that there exists men weak enough to make the decision to NOT fight.  I hardly ever met an old man that hadn't served and when I did learn of one I was ashamed for him.

Now we see able bodied men protesting the war and voicing support for our enemies and I am disgusted and ashamed.  I do not understand how these cowards can voice opposition to our Nation's reactions to the Muslim extremists that have killed thousands of our men and women.  If you go back to the 70's, 80's, and 90's (Embassy in Iran, Marine Barracks, US Embassy in Lebanon, Munich Olympic murders, many airline hijackings, cruise ship murders, thousands of kidnappings and torturous murders of White Europeans in the Mid East) you see the dramatic escalation of terrorist's violence against the United States and Western Europe.  And you can see court decisions where much of the blame for the deaths of thousands of our men and woman and some children were attributed directly to terror states like Libya, Iran, Syria, etc...etc...

Then whammo in 2001 more atrocities were committed but this time ON U.S. SOIL.  Then BAM again in this decade the bombings in England and BOOM the bombings in Spain.Yet we still have ignorance and cowardice prevailing with the liberal socio-commie peace mongering leftists calling the current administration "War Criminals."  <-- While it is necessary to have a balance, I think these undignified AWOL creeps should be ashamed of themselves.

I'm seeing much of the same problems today I remember from the 70s.  This includes: fuel crisis, starving people in the world, economic woes, leftist power swing, hatred for the military, and even another Jimmy Carter wannabe running for the white house.

All I can say is OH KRAPP

Pity that WWII and the Iraq war have absolutely nothing in common... Sad that the genuine patriotism of the 2nd World War is used to further the Bush Cabal's war in Iraq. Al-Qaida and the Taliban struck the US from Afghanistan, remember Afghanistan? We declared war upon them, absolutely right! Then Bush-Cheney-Wolfowitz-Rumsfeld saw an opportunity and used 9-11 to justify an attack on Iraq... Its like the US attacking Indonesia because of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. It is a slander to the cause of those who served in the Pacific and fought the Japanese under the most horrific conditions of warfare possible to compare their cause with Iraq. It is even a more shameful to send 4000+ of America's finest young people to their death in Iraq as well as the 30,000+ who were wounded, and countless others who carry deep mental scars. Its shameful that those who organized the Iraq war continue to fail so horribly at meeting the basic needs to those they sent who returned alive.

I can say I'm completely against the Iraq war. I've NEVER sided with Hammas, Al Quada or any other terrorist organization. I've also NEVER protested against the troops- it's not their fault. I HAVE protested against an administration that found a way NOT to serve in war but was quick to send other people's children into harms way. I respect those in the military as much as anyone- I've been lucky enough to have two fathers (at different times) and BOTH were in the military. One served two times in Vietnam- and he is just as adamant about Iraq being a crock of horse fertilizer sold to the American people. I would join and fight against any enemy that actually posed a threat to this nation...oh, that's right, they won't let me. Don't assume that because someone is against a needless war, that they are against the troops. Maybe if we hadn't stepped in this Iraq mess, we could have captured Bin Ladin- remember him, he actually attacked our country- still out there somewhere.

jon2four, Semper Fi, My dad was a Marine in Viet Nam, and you guys kicked their rear ends, hands down, the crooks in Washington and the hippie protesters lost the war for us by swaying public opinion. This war is different though, these are thugs that are willing to sacrifice their own kids to kill "infidels" they hit us here on our own soil. It's high time we pull together and put politics aside and crush these maniacs.

defeyent, I served as a Marine ,and you have a point about those academics who are so quick to protest against those who keep them safe. They are the very ones who should know better.I have no simpathy for those in Guitmo who were caught trying to kill servicemen and women and our fellow countrymen. Keep them there for life without a trial and those who would protect them.

Darn Skippy its not unamerican to question authority or why things happen. I can't and wouldn't argue with much of what 'Chic and jon2four is saying. But I can say that I'm seeing way too many Berkley freaky whiney punks protesting against Marines and for Hezbollah and other such things. It quite frankly hurts to see so many supposedly educated people spitting on the same people who strive to protect and care for them.

KRAPP, Don't be so quick to judge we're all Americans here not conservatives or liberals, those are just labels politicians use to divide the public and keep you confused. There is nothing wrong with asking questions of those who ask you to give your life or the life of your and my sons and daughters because of some politicians idealogical bent. I served two tours in Vietnam, later to find it was a political war and had nothing to do with the security of the country. If Vietnam was so important why is America still here and we're out of vietnam. That taught me to ask questions of those who are so quick to send others to do their fighting and dieing .Don't you think your life is just as important as those who ask you to fight and die. It's not unamerican to question our politicians. We are a nation of rebels.

i don't recall iraq doing anything to invade our right to freedom or choice. if i am wrong, please correct me...with something other than speculation.

afghanistan, yeah, that's a war on terror. justified, and legitimate.

sacrificing to work a couple hours of overtime in a lab or the classroom is NOT the same as putting your life on the line-period!

defeyent, when we are "done" with Iraq, whether by victory or defeat (from the hands of the leftist politicians), all these "brave" young men who say that the fight needs to be in Afghanistan will suddenly enlist...yeah, right, monkeys will fly out their azzes, before THAT ever happens. But, they've been using that as an excuse for their unwillingness to serve for years...oh well, it all goes back to the sheep, the sheepdogs and the wolf...thank God for you sheepdogs!

don't discredit heros here in teh US who don't fight. Not all heros are wearing uniforms
