I was privileged to work for Senator Helms in his Washington office while President Reagan was in office. He was a great man who stood on principle and didn't change his positions because of the latest polls or because someone criticized him. There seem to be few left that even understand that kind of integrity. I pray that God will comfort Mrs. Helms and his other family members.

As a young black person growing up in Durham during the mid and late 60's I recall my parents and other adults discussing Mr. Helm's comments on WRAL. Some of those comments were downright hateful and bigoted. Later in life, I remember him having similar beliefs, opinions and actions. The worst part of his actions was that he legitimized bigotry and prejudice. I sincerely hope in his final days he let go of these ignorant racist, imperialist and sexist beliefs. I hope comfort to his family and pray for his soul, because someone that voice hate

Our condolences are extended to the Helms family. God bless Jesse. He was a great man. Sincerely, Nancy Lester

Jesse Helms was a great American and true patriot. For those people that are making degrading remarks this is a prime example of being very inconsiderant, disrespectful and tastless. They obviously never heard the expression, "If you can not say anything good about someone, then don't say anything."

Mr. Helms was the kind of man heroes are made of. He was a man of strong conviction, not a compromising bone in his body. Thank God for a man who will stand up for what's right. My father respected him greatly as do I. May they reminisce together in heaven. My thought and prayers are with the family. I know how hard it is to lose such an important part of your lives. God Bless!

Senator Helms was indeed a man who stood by his convictions, regardless of the fact that they were backward and harmed many citizens in this state and country. Like a page out of classic period pieces fictionalizing the Old South, Helms was a true Southern gentleman, always unfailingly polite, even as he disparaged individuals and whole classes of people. He was a brilliant politician, knowing which buttons to push to foment distrust of so-called outsiders, hatred of the other and fear of progressive ideas. His constituent services were second to none, as he knew that while he was a representative of all the people of this great country, he needed but a majority of North Carolina voters, comprised of his core constituency (with whom Helms epitomized their beliefs, values and aspirations), to prevail to continue his reign of error. Godspeed to your final resting place, Senator. May you and Rev. Falwell and others of your persuasion enjoy eternal reflection.

I admired Jesse Helms so much. He was a man of honesty, integrity and respect. If Jesse said he was going to do something, you could carry it to the bank. He never wavered in what he believed in. He stood his ground when placed on the spot. I didn't know him personally, but believe that he would have made anyone feel like he had known them his whole life. I believe this man was a man of God. I think he tried to make decisions according to the scripture. I wish all Senators were like him. I have raised my children to measure someone who holds public office up to Jesse Helms. Unfortunately there aren't any out there that can compare to Jesse. The people of the State of North Carolina can be proud to say that they had a Senator such as Jesse Helms. He would have made an outstanding President. To his wife and family I wish to express my sympathy.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Helms family during this time. He will be truly missed.

We have lost a real Statesman with the passing of Senator Helm.My prays are with his family at this time.

As a young fellow, I remember watching Jesse do the Editorials on WRAL many years ago. Jesse Helms held true to his moral convictions and NEVER compromised his values. I respect that a hell of a lot. My wife (who is a RN) took care of Jesse during a stay at WakeMed in Raleigh a few years back and she said he was a true southern gentlemen that was polite to everyone he encountered during his stay there. I never met Jesse, but I have always liked and respected him. I think he did North Carolina proud. Rest in Peace, Jesse, and God Bless Your Family.
