did i miss something??

Published Jul. 7, 2008

I understand that Jesse Helms has died in the last few days......What I don't understand is all the hoopla over what a wonderful man he was and how is stood for what North Carolina is and was.

I have only lived here for 3 years and after doing some research over the weekend about Helms I am scared to learn what North Carolina IS and WAS.  I am sure that this has been blogged about over the weekend, but I have not been on here since Thursday morning (major withdrawls....)

I am just asking what was SO great about this man that I missed in my research?  It is certainly evident that he stood for something and never waivered in the 90 years he was alive!!

"He had his racial issues along with the other zillion blacks and whites growing up in that time era. You could not call him a racist in today's time............."

---

But when it's a central theme in his 1990 and 1996 campaigns against Harvey Gantt (who was black)...it proved conclusively that he'd really not progressed on that subject in the preceding 40 years even allowing for the cultural norms of his formative years.

That's the crux of my problem with his politics...his absolute beliefs in his rightness. Belief anchors you and doesn't allow you to easily accept other ideas...life becomes static and you can't grow as a person as you can from idea to idea.

Even when it's patently obvious to almost everyone else on the planet that you're wrong!

Certainly, he was very representative of his times. I'm thankful that for the most part, we've grown beyond that outdated world view.

Our society isn't close to perfect in this area...but it's a lot closer to that ideal than he was.

"Well, he always stood up for what he believed in." ~most of the people here in so many words.

Yeah, well so did Hitler. And Jeffery Dalmer.

Well, I was born and raised here in beautiful Raleigh. My experiences with him were limited to seeing him jaywalk through five points while waving to everyone like he was some celebrity. (No one was waving back) And giving a speech at my church regarding his prejudices agains "negros". I have never had any use for the man. But since he is now gone, God bless him and go in peace.

Guess what... many African American's also own SLUMS of houses which they rent out to the public.

An African American lady who works at my office owns several apartments which she rents through the Housing Authority.. and they have just been re-inspected and didn't pass. Why you ask? Because the tenants have utterly destroyed the apartments.

What Jessie's wife did is NO different than what many people all over the country do.. be they white, black, asain, mexican.. whatever.

There is no point in putting dirty, disrespectful, callous people in a nice new apartment.

Your comment was pointless and not needed..

Before we sign Helms praises for the AIDS spending, lets not forget what he himself said about his own actions regarding AIDS for many, many years.

"I have been too lax too long in doing something really significant about AIDS."

Would that be considered a flip-flop?

especially the slum housing his wife rented to indigents near downtown for decades which became condemned after it was brought to light by one of the news channels.

That's not her fault. You could put those folks up in a new home and watch it go down the tubes in little to no time. They are "renters" and for the most part,do not care about someone else's property.Look at West Gville what they did to it.It looks like a third world country.SE Raleigh? Just about anyplace where MLK names is plastered.

"It is certainly evident that he stood for something and never waivered in the 90 years he was alive!!"

Well that's certainly true, and some of it wasn't very admirable...especially the slum housing his wife rented to indigents near downtown for decades which became condemned after it was brought to light by one of the news channels.

Still - a man is dead, and prayer for comfort to his loved ones is a compassionate exercise.

God bless.

He was the last of an era gone by. When politicians really went to the bat for their constitutes. When you wrote his office you knew it was going to be personally handled by the staff and you'd get some answers to your problem. He had his racial issues along with the other zillion blacks and whites growing up in that time era. You could not call him a racist in today's time.............

anti-communist, anti-socialist; pushed (along with Bill Frist) most extensive funding through the senate for fighting AIDS (most people forget about that)

he was a strong conservative. many times it made him look unfavorable towards minority groups, but often it was a matter of keeping the government in it's proper role, not discriminatory towards a certain group of people. his personal opinions in the past unfortunately reinforce that connotation. whether he "saw the light" when it came to race in the past few years of his senate career, is debatable :) good people are often far from perfect.
