why bring murder into the house on tv?

Published Jul. 6, 2008

MrKagain asked why Springer? I ask, Why murder?

Why do we want to watch murder mysteries? How many of us have experienced murder in our personal or professional lives, and if we have, would we want to watch it on TV.

Murder

Murder, she Wrote

Diagnosis Murder

CSI

Crossing Jordan

Matlock

Perry Mason

Barnaby Jones

Hawaii 50

Cold Case

Law & Order

Snapped

and there are more, I;m sure.

I like Matlock because I like Andy being tight with money and funny with women.

I like Perry Mason <b&W> because Perry had so much intregrity.

I don't care for CSI, or re-enactments, but I used to love Paul Winfield narrations of those shows...."New Bern is a sleepy little southern town, and the smell of salt water was in the air at the doctor's house, where Mrs. Doctor was tending the gardner who tended the flower bed...

The original Perry Mason series was great...but I can't watch the TV specials for some reason.

I can't watch CSI, or law and order, or any of them that make it too personal.

These type of T.V. shows will never ever teach or prepare you to deal with any real life situation. Thinking it will is only a lie to yourself. You have to make snap judgment decisions from a single point of view in the real world. I have seen enough death and dismemberment for all of your lifetimes!!

I'm one that agrees that we are desensitized to violence via TV programs. I also think TV and video game violence ARE teaching us to glorify violence. Our younger folks are being taught (apparently not by their parents?) that crime and violence is expected, just don't get caught. We are reaping what we sow.

All the cop shows are boring. Why do they not have shows about life in a trailer park? Imagine a soap opera about people who live in trailers. It would be alot more interesting than the boring shows about spoiled rich people. Make a show about the common man and woman.

Basically all of those TV shows end's up with what is known as, Systematic desensitization to lots of people!

If you have seen the new's lately and wonder how/why people can do some of the things that they do, TV plays a big part in it. Look at the guy that got hit by a car, and people walked right past him as nothing had ever happened. That is definitely just a drop in the bucket compared to all the other damage the shows do. Regardless of what anyone thinks, those TV shows only give you an "Idea" of what is going on, they do not give you the 100% picture that you would need to be considered knowledgable in those areas. Those CSI shows make it hard for us that have to do "real" Police work and the more shows that come out the harder it is to explain to citizens that things just do not work the way they do on TV.

patty - I felt the same way and don't watch horror or suspense movies or movies with too much blood and gore...Dexter turned out to be a little different...I liked the characters that surrounded him, and as it turned out, he was a serial killer, who tracked down another serial killer by being able to second guess the one protrayed as the "badguy"...It was like a weird twist to Profiler...but not for kids...

I just don't like shows or movies that has alot of murder and violence in them. I, for sure, would not watch Dexter (no disrespect to anyone who does). We, put to death, serial killers, so I'm certainly not going to watch a show that has one for the main star. This is just my opinion!!

i used to love to watch murder stories but, got sooo tired of that being all that is on. i try to find other things to watch. i even feed the brain once in awhile! lol

Paul Winfield's narrative throughout "City Confidential" was the greatest.

I think I would have enjoyed hearing him read a phone book. While he was always speaking of murder, it seemed very unintrusive when voiced by him. He was a great talent.

Loved the early Perry Mason, and now the orginial Law & Order re-runs. My favorites are actually the Thin Man movie series. Nick and Nora Charles had style.
