I didn't learn about it until we saw 'Silent Hill'.
There are some really cool photos on several Web sites showing the town before, and the town now.

That's the Centralia mine fire, started by burning garbage. The government bought the whole town, and they can't put it out. It's burned 40 or 50 years, and is famous. It's on my places-to-drive-out-of-my-way-for list.
Like Russian nuclear accidents, Communist China has covered up environmental problems by ignoring or declaring it FIXED, and fixed is the word. China is in environmental crisis now, way beyond the coal fires.
Takistan or Tajistan, one of those -stans that was part of the USSR, has coal fires that are still b urning after thousands of years. They even started them to get ,or make, another mineral.
I used to go with my dad to get that hard blue anthracite coal in West Va. and bring a truck load back to NC. In 1960, most people sold and used soft coal. NC was blessed to not have commercial veins of coal.

The fires are not necessarily communist or capitalist. Lightning can start a grass fire can start a coal, and people do too. Ancient man thought gods lived in the peat bog fire areas...sacred ground.

Peat just needs to dry out, catch fire, and then it slowly burns. Peat dries out when the trees are cut, and there's drought, of sorts. Oxygen can get underground by many means, and is trapped in the peat, which is plant material that didn't completely decompose. Lightning can start one. Takes tons and tons of water to put a peat fire out. Can't use sea water b/c of the salt. I don't know where they are getting the water.
China claims to have put out a century old coal fire. Great for the environment! Of course, it still glows and smokes, but that's the communist way...say it and its done.
