where would we be????

Published Jul. 6, 2008

Reading some blogs lately on the results of the Iraq war which is dwindling into the public eye, I got into deep thought.  In the past year on Golo we have had some serious and not so serious debates on the Iraq War.  I wish to ask you as I  was thinking.  Let's theorize.  If we had continued to accept the acts of terrorism on us as the previous administration did, where would we be now?  Let's say if Bush had ignored the 911 fiasco and we went on about  as if nothing happened.  Where would America be now?  We'd have trillions to spend in other places so what do you picture America's position in the world today.??? Would we have the gas crisis, the immigration problem, the economy problem, the jobs leaving America problem???What would we have done differently in the life of America.  Just wondering here?? Would it have gone into education, infrastructor,  someone's pockets,  or wasteland as so much does?  Would we be any better off or would we have been continously attacked ????

It really is too bad that Colin Powell isn't on the ballot! He seems to possess that rare dignity and grace.

A lot of the issues: immigration, job security, job outsourcing, fuel prices, etc have been building for some time. The reason is really is more reflective of our overall lifestyles over the past 20 years, than the war. I would love to think (and hope!!) we would have used the money to address these problems and invest in our citizens education and healthcare. It does not seem a priority to either party. Our country is seen to be so many different things. On one hand we help other countries with food and medicine. From other sources, we are terrible brutal capitalists bullying others around. How about we tend to business here first and then when we are whole and strong, start helping others? I'm not sure where we would have ended up, at war with Korea maybe? It just doesn't seem likely that Bush would have been promoting book reading. Even though he was lucky enough to go to fine schools, I'm not sure he appreciated it, nor took advantage of it.

I am hoping that someone besides Obama or McCain wins this election... lol.... wishful thinking I know.

your belief that the government will protect you ...is a misplaced one.

Slow down bones I've NEVER siad america is free from attacks. i eaxpected one by now from someone, which hasn't happened. I watch the CNN reports on how bad our ports are and I see how bad our bordaers are. So what this is Bush's fault too??? One thing about it is that evidently they are securer than they were ten years ago.....So what do you thin we would have done with allthat money spent on the war had we not gone?? Would we have spend it on defense border protection, education or squandered it as usually was done when domestic spending stayed high on our list? Just asking???Not a war blog dear...........

your belief that the government will protect you ...is a misplaced one. our ports are wide open with only a small percentage of containers being searched. it has not been that long since 9/11....we think a great deal of time has passed it has not....and the war has spawned new generations of terrorists.

where would we be ..if bush has used the good will of the world...to really attack terrorism....if we had allowed the time for the world to come together instead of attacking afghanistain....which had already been at world for decades with russia....where would we be had we traced the money and found the true backs...where would we be if we had focused world attention on capturing bin laden instead of toppling governments. do you think war was the only means of security? the us will be attacked again ...americans forget taht the arabs are willing to wait years or more...look at the time between the trade city attacks...they have been able to cripple us with little resources....the uss cole....the world trade city attacks. yes we needed to take action but we needed to take prudent actions....what was the rush to war?

LadyBlue - this is why I have such a deep respect for you - blogs like this.

I agree with STS..all they understand is strength...

well, I'd say the democrats would be looking for something else to biitch about...

definitely suggest not turning our backs ....

STS SailbadTheSinner

Agreed and they feel the same way about us in Iraq I'm sue...........

Had we not gone to war? Which war?

The Revolutionary...we would be a part of Canada or they us, and tied tighter to England.

The Civil War...we would be living in the Conferderate States of America, and slavery would have ended as it has elsewhere, without over 600,000 Americans dying, and their descendants living. But, we probably would have sided against the old USA and had a war anyway.

WWI - Had we stayed out of it, remained truly neutral, then I don't know. Europe may have found a peace Germany could live with, and WWII never have happened.

WWII - Had we stayed out, and neutral as pacifists wanted, Japan would not have attacked the US, would have taken over Asia and Australia and still be a military power. China would not have been communist. Mao wouldn't have killed 50 million Chinese. Hitler would have still lost to the USSR, which would have then taken all of EU & England. The US would have been richer by supplying all sides, then communist dominated weaklings.

Korea -
