He's also refused to apologize for making statements that homosexuals who die of AIDS deserve their fate. He wrote back to one mother of an AIDS victim that he was sad only for her son's decision "to play Russian roulette with his sexuality."
So, while we can respect his death and wish him peace, let's be honest about what he was, ok?

Sure, Helms spoke his mind. Sure, he didn't flip-flop. But that's hardly worthy qualification for political leadership. The same might be said for a plethora of dictators, tyrants, fascists, anarchists, or plain old curmudgeons.
I've read earnest attestments as to how Helms helped people expedite their passport applications. So the privileged few that could afford foreign travel were well serviced? Nice for them. And Mussolini made the trains run on time, too.
Before someone rushes in breathlessly to complain about how I'm putting down sweet old Jesse, I'll clarify that I'm actually addressing this to his legions of simpering supporters. I've never understood the "but you know what he stands for" non sequitur offered with the air of one finessing a logical coup. This line has always seemed little more than a respectable excuse for supporting some very controversial views.

Honestly? No, not really. I respect Frank for throwing it all out there in front of the voters re: his sexuality, but I don't much like his politics. Farrakhan is just a loon.
I respected Helms for the same reason, in that he did say what he thought. I just don't really like what he had to say, especially the bigoted parts, and with all the sweet Uncle Jesse babble that's being passed around, I felt like it was important to see the whole picture.

From a fiscal perspective, he accurately predicted the outcome. It has, in-effect, spent trillions of dollars to create an outcome that would have happened even if the government had done nothing. The Act, and especially Affirmative Action, have statistically done little to alter pre-1964 trend lines in most areas.
