Regardless of how you felt about Jesse's politics, one had to respect he never retreated on his core beliefs, his soul was not for sale...jack

Raleigh, N.C. — Jesse Helms, the firebrand U.S. senator whose outspoken, conservative views polarized North Carolina and U.S. voters for decades, died early Friday, according to John Dodd, president of the Jesse Helms Center.

He was 86.

His cause of death was not released.

Helms served five terms in the U.S. Senate, retiring in 2003 because of his faltering health. During his 30 years in Capitol Hill, the North Carolina Republican became a powerful voice for a conservative movement that was growing both in Congress and across the country, and he used his position to speak out against issues like gay rights, federal funding for the arts and U.S. foreign aid.

someone wrote that if you love Jesse Helms you must hate the Lord. Seems like scripture tells us to love one another. Guess the writer of this message doesn't serve the God of Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob nor do they adhere to the teachings of Christ. They will have a hard time making heaven with hate in their hearts!

Helms called UNC the "University of Negroes and Communists". Among his other stunts was singing Dixie in an elevator at the Senate when he was riding it with Sen Carol Moseley-Braun. He said he was doing it to "make her cry". Oh, and he was against AIDS research because "There is not one single case of AIDS in this country that cannot be traced in origin to sodomy."

In domestic politics he denounced the 1964 Civil Rights Act as "the single most dangerous piece of legislation ever introduced in the Congress", voted against a supreme court justice because she was "likely to uphold the homosexual agenda", acted for years as spokesman for the large tobacco companies, was reprimanded by the justice department and the federal election commission for electoral malpractice, and compiled a dismal personal record as a slum landlord.

During 1950, Helms created an ad which informed the following: "White people, wake up before it is too late. Do you want Negroes working beside you, your wife and your daughters, in your mills and factories? Is this the man that is being glorified by some today? Not by me. In several of his tributes, some simply do not mention at all his views on civil rights. I guess it is time now for him to answer to the higher power. Helms- may God have pity on your soul!

I can not fathom how our NC Democratic office holders can praise this segregationist? If you were black or a white that was politicly different then Helm's He was no tenacious "gentlemen". These tributes are an offense to very person of colour. Shame on Ms. Chau reporting not one racist quote this Senator said on WRAL shows you what's going on today in this safe media.

WRAL should be ashamed of ever putting this bigot and his unashamedly racist views on the airways years ago, and even more ashamed of giving him more than a passing mention in today's news. These articles of hero-worship and idolatry has turned me off of channel 5 for good.

Condolences to the Senator's friends and family. I respected the man. Did not share many of the same views but always thought it was important to hear what he had to say. Feel the same way about Ted Kennedy. Both "ultra" politicians, both made me think; however, "Ultra" anything bothers me.

Senator Helms was a controversial politician, no doubt about it, especially when it was to his benefit like most politicians. He pandered to a scary faction, they finally ran out of steam no longer tolerated in our courts of law and our social conscience. We've come a long way and may have a long way to go but I hope we'll go it together as AMERICANS - not Afro-Americans, Hispanic Americans, Italian Americans or Asian Americans, etc. -as AMERICANS. This country is governed by THE PEOPLE and we, THE PEOPLE, are AMERICANS. For the right now and the future of my children and grandchildren, our race is not important -- the content of our character and our allegiance is. Just my 2 cents worth

Mike Easley most have lost his mind to order NC to honor this hateful racist. Jesse I hope you are getting your just dessert for all the hate you spewed against blacks.

Jesse Helms was a bigot. He represented our state for five terms with that bigot mouth and that bigot smirk. Whoever calls this man a gentleman is probably wearing a KKK hood and burning a cross in their backyard. Good riddance Jesse... I hope that you come back as a black man in your next life.

It's just a matter of time before they name RDU Helms International. It's a shame that this fine state will always be known for a man who was so filed with hate against people who were not exactly like him. I'm not impressed that he changed his view on AIDS toward the end of his life. That was truly just the mark of a mean old man trying to get into heaven. Say what you want, praise him all you like, but I know that right now hell has one more tortured soul buring for all eternity.

Like Ted Kennedy, Jesse was a polarizing figure. Like Ted Kennedy, Jesse was a powerful and influential politician. Like Ted Kennedy, Jesse represented the extreme wing of his political party. UNLIKE Ted Kennedy, Jesse was not born into wealth, but earned whatever wealth he acquired. UNLIKE Ted Kennedy, Jesse was a moral man and did not chase skirts. The US Congress, and the country need the balance represented by both of these men.
