Regardless of how you felt about Jesse's politics, one had to respect he never retreated on his core beliefs, his soul was not for sale...jack

Raleigh, N.C. — Jesse Helms, the firebrand U.S. senator whose outspoken, conservative views polarized North Carolina and U.S. voters for decades, died early Friday, according to John Dodd, president of the Jesse Helms Center.

He was 86.

His cause of death was not released.

Helms served five terms in the U.S. Senate, retiring in 2003 because of his faltering health. During his 30 years in Capitol Hill, the North Carolina Republican became a powerful voice for a conservative movement that was growing both in Congress and across the country, and he used his position to speak out against issues like gay rights, federal funding for the arts and U.S. foreign aid.

My parents&i met Mr.jess helms&family. When his grandchildren had horses there in raleigh,NC.We dearly miss him.

Dixons familys Wilmington,NC

a9cm40, I wanted to let you know that some sites linking to our Jesse Helms obit are apparently manipulating the URL to make it appear that WRAL has a bias against Mr. Helms. We would never publish something in such bad taste. The part with the question mark is NOT a part of the official URL and NOT generated by WRAL.com. The official URL is here: http://www.wral.com/news/local/politics/story/1755723/. According to our technical team, anyone can tack on a question mark and words to a URL and the link will appear to load. It seems someone is looking to stir up trouble. - Kelly H. (WRAL.com web editor)

That is WRAL's response to Senator Helm's death. To say the least, this is disgusting and inappropriate. In all honesty, it speaks volumes about WRAL, their employees, and management."

The "?good-riddance" part of that link does not exist on the homepage. I suspect that you fabricated that part of the link solely to make people angry, for whatever your own reasons might have been.

Please seek life elsewhere, troll.

Thanks Kelly H. and danriverboy for the explanation about that URL - it took me a few minutes to figure out this was not a valid WRAL web site - a9cm40 must think he is being cute, but is really just being childish.

gee...i would like to say I am sorry to hear this......but this man was a total embarassment to the people of North Carolina. He is racist and so anti-gay he should be considered anti-american. A loss?....perhaps to his family...but I suspect they too were not all that happy with what he represented.

Apparantly my comment got yanked. Anytime the truth about a right-winged racist gets stated, the old honor code is pulled. You can sure tell this is right-winged nutville land. Maybe I was a little harsh but he was truly a horrible man(always used the poor and powerless to scare the rich and powerful into action). Worse than him though are the morons here who continued to re-elect him.

jankenpie, it's obvious you were not born or raised here. I can think of several politicians right now who use the poor and powerless against the rich and the powerful. Please don't call people morons when they vote their conscience, as I'm sure you will in November.

So all know, I have not deleted any comments. Jesse was a very polarizing figure, as these comments clearly show. Like abortion or the Iraq war, hardly anyone is in the middle. I have always believed we need balance in our Congress....500+ Nancy Pelosi's would not be good, nor would 500+ Jesse's. On this day, we can further see how brilliant our founding fathers were.

And as for you tomac108, so if I'm against homosexuality, then I'm anti-American? Where does that come from...and he was not an embarrassment to NC. Obviously, we elected him over and over!

As the saying goes; " Stand for something or you'll fall for anything." Sen Jesse Helms stood for the things he believed in and lived a life that reflected those values, ...un selfishly! More of a legacy left than many who try to define themselves and can't quite find out who they are or what they want you to believe they are...Mmmm

I'd stand with Jesse anyday, anywhere, anytime.

I feel sorry for this man and everyone that believed in his brain washed beliefs. Its sad how close minded people can be. He obviously was weak minded. He appealed to a group of North Carolinans that were raised to be racist and hate anybody that didn't look like them or believe what they believed in. This country is in such a mess right now. It is because of people like Helms that brought us there. I am very happy his era is over. May god have pity on his soul!

Regardless of politics. Jesse did much for our Country and State. He was human. How can ncmusicman get away with saying this on here? We can't use a curse word, but, he can condemn a person. This is the part that I dislike about GOLO.

Well now that we know how the Yankee's feel about Helms...

I didn't know him as a Man, I only knew of some of his views on some issues. Some I agreed with, many I did not. I respect him as a man that believed with his whole heart his personal convictions. NCMUSICMAN...what you have stated on this blog, was inappropriate at the least, and tacky. He was a human being before anything else. I pray peace be upon his family.

The word "hell" in my previous post was used as a noun, not a curse word. Yes, Jesse Helms "did a lot for our Country and State" in much the same way Hitler did a lot for Germany - they both espoused hatred, bigotry, racism, discrimination, and close-mindedness, to name a few of their better qualities. Jesse Helms used the Bible as a battering ram to preach his evil. He no more knew the true meaning of Christianity and compassion then the man in the moon (to use a tired cliche). And for the record: I'm a born and bred North Carolinian who considers Jesse Helms to be one of the biggest blights on the history of this great state!

ncmusican - I could not have said it better myself! Makes me want to go buy some fireworks and celebrate the 4th even more!

I seems to me that those that don't show their idenity may be able to say more than those of us who identify ourselves. Anyone agree?

From his biography "Righteous Warrior": "Helms’s office was also known for unusual staff loyalty and dedication, despite low pay: the senator paid some of the lowest salaries on Capitol Hill, and he always made it a point to return money to the Congress. He scrupulously avoided excessive overseas travel himself; his staff traveled at private expense. Very often they made phone calls at their own expense because they realized how carefully he scrutinized the phone bills."

RETURNED money to Congress? Avoided excessive overseas travel? Wow....wouldn't expect that from a politician now, would you?

I think it is sad, some of the venom I have read here. Yes Jesse was polarizing, but as I posted earlier, we need balance in DC. 554 members of Congress that all thought like Nancy Pelosi would be just as dangerous as 554 Jesse clones. I regret some of you cannot see that.

Simply unbelievable that anyone would honor a man who was so filled with hatred for others.

I was never a fan of his politics, but my thoughts are with his family.

Back in the early nineties, we were members of the Rex Wellness Center. He was in exercise therapy, having just had heart surgery.

Anyway, I was there with my now ex-husband, and we had some t-shirts on with slogans, one of which read 'Life Is Not A Dress Rehearsal'.

For whatever reason, that shirt caught Helms' eye, and he stopped us to comment on it. He liked the shirt.

Neither of us was a fan of his politics, of course.

I don't think it meant the exact same thing to him that it did to me, that slogan.

But it was an interesting encounter, nonetheless.

I'm certain that Jesse Helms the man was decent to his friends and family, and they will miss him dearly.

OldRebel, You are spot on. I'll stand with you anyday, anyhow.

I would consider ncmusicman a blight on humanity as a whole.

I wonder how many of these "rot in hell, Jesse" posters would get their panties in a wad if they saw a negative post about Ted Kennedy's brain cancer? THAT would be "intolerance", "small-mindedness", "typical conservative response".

Dido..you know, that's a really good point. I don't recall seeing anything like like about Ted like I've seen today on Jesse. Maybe the liberals and left aren't as loving as they keep tellingthemselves. And maybe the conservatives and the right aren't as cruel and hard hearted as they kept being told they are. Good point indeed.

I will long remember Senator Helms and his willingness to stand for what he believed in. I remember listening to him when I was in High School and he was a commentator on Channel 5. I wrote him several times stating that I agreed with is views and he always wrote me back. We need more people in government who will boldly stand up for what they believe in rather than go by public opinion polls which are many times untrue. INSTEAD OF GOD BLESS AMERICA WE SHOULD START BLESSING GOD.

I will never forget when my brother Charles went to Viet Nam in the Marines in 1968. Jesse Helms was doing a daily commentary on WRAL. My mother wrote to Jesse Helms and told him how much Charles loved listening to his commentaries. Without us even asking he sent a copy of his commentary at his own expense daily for 13 months. He will never know how much Charles enjoyed it. My whole family really appreciated Jesse Helms doing that. He was truly a southern gentlemen. He will surely be missed. There will never be another Jesse Helms.

Nick & Linda Coley

Oh, since we conservatives are all jackbooted thugs I might as well say it. I would love 5 minutes in a room with ncmusicman...make that ten. You should be ashamed of your pukey self boy.

Helms, Obama, Clinton, Bush, McCain, does it really matter? Unfortunately it took segregationist Governor Wallace to reveal the truth that "there's not a dime's worth of difference between" Republicans and Democrats. The Democrats willingly went along with the War in Iraq, suspension of Habeas Corpus, detaining protesters, banning books like "America Deceived' from Amazon, stealing private lands (Kelo decision), warrant-less wiretapping and refusing to investigate 9/11 properly. They are both guilty of treason. Support Dr. Ron Paul and save this great nation. Dido

Kennedy stood for justice for all. Helms was a racist. Its as simple as that!

No. Ted Kennedy stands for "payments for all" especially if you are a member of some perceived underclass.

The only stance I really take here is that we do need a diversity of views in Congress. There are extremist on both sides, but I believe that is actually a good thing. At least they are professional and polite, which is more than can be said of a few extremists here at golo, who resort to juvenile comments...you know who you are.

Senator Jessie Helms was a product of his upbringing. His statements, actions, and sentiments weren't always the best. But he believed in God, family, and country. His battle for those values have earned my respect and gratitude. May God have mercy on his soul.

redcanyon

One thing I am sure Ted Kennedy "stood for" for enough time to sober up before callingt he authorities while Mary Jo Kopechne drowned in a watery grave that Teddy Boy drove into coming home from a party. Oh yes, Ted Kennedy really stands.

Loved or despised, Jesse Helms had a backbone like we have not seen in many years in government... and because of that, We, the People, are in trouble!

Of all of the elected officials I have ever written to, Sen. Helms' replies were the only ones where comments were made that clearly showed that I was not receiving a "form letter", like most politicians send out. He would reference things like when he was a journalist for ______, etc., and then go back to the letter's subject.

It's sad when haters let their hate live beyond the lifetime of those they hate.

As Rachel Ray might put it, "how self-defeating and ignorant is that"?!

Senator Helms - how much we have missed him not being there in the US Senate as a stalwart against the tax and spend, corrupt politicians. How much we now miss him and mourn his loss to his family, his friends, to this state, to our nation and to the world - to all who have cherished freedom - polititcal, economic, cultural - this great man did. Unlike the Easley's or the Edwards, Senator Helms NEVER abused his position. Rather, he and his staff worked extremely hard to provide expert, effective service to his fellow NC citizens - no matter their race, gender, political affiliation. Again, unlike many corrupt politicians of today, Sen. Helms saw government service as just that - SERVICE to his fellow man. God bless this good and humble and effective servant! May God raise up more like him for our state and our nation at this our time of need.

"Kennedy stood for justice for all. Helms was a racist. Its as simple as that!"

so when ya can't beat the man you call him a racist now that he is dead....ok its your opinion, fact is Jesse may not have been everyones hero but one dayum thing is for sure, he didn't back down and loved this state.

I am saddened to see that hatred is in the hearts of so many. We are all children of God. Though you may differ in the views of Senator Helms, to wish him harm in any way is of poor character. Jesse worked hard for our country. He sacrificed years of his life so that Americans could live in freedom. Though some of you disagree with him on issues, no one can deny him the thanks he deserves for being stoic and steadfast in his love for our country and our basic rights that are provided in our constitution. We, as Americans, should applaude all who try to do what is right and good for our country, whether we disagree or not. Senator Helms, as the country song mirrors, "you've got to stand for something, or you fall for anything. You've go to be your own man, not a puppet on a string. Never compromise what's right and uphold your family's name." Those wishing he "burn in hell", should re examine your own morality and think WWJD. Murray

Sen. Helms came to my assistance in the 1980s. I testified before his Ag. Committee regarding the Child Care Food Program, another liberal give-away that assists the greedy as it pretends to help the needy.

Because I was threatened for my testimony I contacted the Senator's office to inform officials of the abuse. The advisory committee upon which I served at the time were forthwith in receipt of a letter, detailing the legal ramifications regarding the intimidation of a witness before the U.S. Senate.

I never heard another disparaging word, thanks to Sen. Helms.

back in 1972 my mom and i worked and meet jesse helms .sen.helms is a very nice man and would do anything to help the people in north carolina. sen.helms will dearly missed by everyone who new him .

Thank God, the Devil has call Jesse home!!!!

"UNC is the University of Negros and Coloreds" quote from Jesse helms, 1994. How could anyone call this man a friend who was not white and of the old kracker school?

I can't believe the cruel comments on this subject. I've been praying for Ted Kennedy, even though I disagree with EVERYTHING he stands for. Aren't we all Americans first? And to understand Jessie Helms politics...most people in the South suffered horribly after the Civil War, a war that wasn't about slavery, it was about states rights and individual freedoms, Lincoln used the slaves as an afterhought. Most people in the south, and the rest of the country, were afraid of change. He was one of millions who felt that way. Get over it!!!

I wish I could ask Jesse one question. Which is worse -- the heat or the humidity?

I just hope for his sake, that it's segregated down there.

Bluewind, I think we all know where you are coming from. (Wink, wink)

I love it when my fellow Southerners try to claim the Civil War was about "state's rights" and then forget to mention that the right was the right to own slaves.

Oh, an Kidw4legs, FYI -- you could also argue that Hitler and Stalin each had a backbone. Jesse was hate, pure and simple hate. He lived it. He built his career on it.

If you love Jesse Helms you must hate the Lord. Jesse was not a good man, he built his career on hating anything other than white. Yet I have heard on here numerous times how you hate on Jesse Jackson and Farrakhan and Rev Al, they are genuinely good people.

Out with the old and in with the new.

Treu Blue American Patriot, save your sarcasm. I can trace my family back to the 1820's and NOBODY owned a slave. Slavery is a horrible instuition, and it had to end, but please don't rewrite history to suit your purposes, and don't wink wink at me...

True Blue American Patriot - you have no clue about the love Senator Jesse Helms had for ALL people, of all races. He lived out that love by SERVING his fellow citizens - no matter the race, gender, religion, or political persuasion. Tens of thousands of his BELOVED fellow citizens were helped by his Senate Staff who SERVED SELFLESSSLY, as did the Senator, instead of seeking SELFISH GAIN from their positions.

iamforjustice - Senator Helms lived his life as a Christian, as a follower of Jesus Christ, in the way he treated other people, in the principles he fought for, and in the Godly conduct of himself and his staff-and in his personal life.

He never abused his power as a Senator, EVER, unlike such abusers of their elected office as Easley, Edwards, Clinton, and Obama! Instead of using his elected office to enrich himself, to gain personal favors, Sen,. Helms sought ALWAYS to SERVE his fellow NC citizens - of all races - with HONOR, HONESTY, and EFFECTIVE hard work.
