A Church Point man is facing a felony charge of animal cruelty, in connection with a brutal attack on a horse earlier this summer.
Tony Meyers of Church Point entered a plea of not guilty to a charge of aggravated cruelty to animals. Meyers is accused of brutally attacking a horse he had just purchased, after the mare refused to load up onto a horse trailer. During the incident, Meyers is accused of backing a horse trailer over the mare and leaving her to die.
The horse also suffered a gunshot wound to the head.

**The news story fails to mention that the guy wrapped the horse's halter (essentially, her head) in barbed wire as well. Before he dragged her behind the trailer, backed over her, and shot her. Then left her for dead.

Dj - I absolutely agree...a horse that won't load is SO frustrating. But how this guy got THAT angry...ugh.
I'm frightened that this guy got so upset that he did those awful things to a beautiful creature...what's going to stop him from becoming that frustrated when he's around children? Or other people?? The courts should recognize that he's not only a serious danger to animals - he's a legitimate danger to society!
He'll probably get the minimum fine, minimum sentence, etc. Makes me ill.

The man, who just spent money for the horse, lost control of his own emotions. HE thought he could force a horse on a trailer. You can't push a horse. The barbed wire was a failed pain attempt. Backing over the horse was probably the man's anger and frustration overtaking him...a dangerous manner for an armed man. Shooting the horse might have had merciful intent. In all cases, this man was ineffectual and out of control of himself.
I wish all who load horses, patience, and perspective enough to know a horse might not get on every time.

The older I get, it seems that I'm finding myself preferring their company to that of people.
