dwi part 2

Published Jul. 3, 2008

I blogged a few days ago about getting 2 DWI's in 2005, and accepted full responsibility for my insanity. Most of the comments here were fair and sensible...a couple were not. We all know that 50% of fatal accidents involve alcohol...lots of times there is only a car, a drunk, and a tree involved. So, that means the other 50% are caused by people driving irresponsibly. It does not take a drunk to kill innocent people on the highway. It's called MISDEMEANOR death by vehicle, a $200 fine, and they walk...and continue to drive. Or if they are illegals, they never show up for court. I've been there. This blog will not set well with the pc'ers out there, and I will not get any new friends requests for it.  But I have learned my lesson, hurt no one but my wallet and pride. I am allowed to go to the grocery store once a week, and the doctor for appointments, 8am-8pm in my own county only. I can be stopped without cause and will do 60 days in jail if I blow over .04 (2 beers).  I will never go easy on drunks, but I have been driving tons of miles for over 30 years, and never even had a simple "accident".  We have lots of problems on the highways, drunks are just one part of it.  I no longer drink anything and drive. Maybe I can convince some of you crazies on the road to slow down and be less reckless, and the drunks to find alternatives to drinking and driving. Remember, it's 50/50 %.

So why didn't you turn your license in and bike ride?

You are going to be put into the stereotypical hate drunks group that so many of those "We must sterilize society from thoese people," people do.

'Or if they are illegals, they never show up for court' or just use another name. Don't want to open that box right now.

Good Luck, the penalty is unique because it's a tough lesson that applies to good people too. I've seen an armed bank robber get a lot less on a second offense at the same bank (know that for a fact)but that doesn't mean you're right. It sounds like you're on the right track. That's why I'm home drinking on this stupid computer.

Jack, I have a lot of respect for your for taking responsibility for your actions, and sharing this with us.

2005 was a rough year for you man. It takes guts to admit serious mistakes.

The next step is learning from it & doing whatever it takes to overcome your mistake(s). If someone drinks, eventually, they will get behind the wheel, & that is a fact.

Jack...DWI is one of pet peeves and a cause that I fight for. I commend you for your admission of making two wrong decision(s) in '05. That was in the past. I would never hold that against anyone - especially you. Apparently, you are still paying for it. You learned from your mistake. You regret it. Thankfully, no one was hurt - except you. Let those without guilt throw the first stone. There are so many distractions when driving. I agree with something2say. What about the cell phones, makeup application, radio, cd player, kids, picking something up off the floor, etc... I see people yakking on a cell phone while driving every day. This should be against the law, also. They slow down, speed up, slow down again - Totally distracted. I am in no way condoning DWI, but it is not something you should feel bad about forever. Why do you still not have a license? 3 years is a long time. I know people that have gotten numerous DWI's and still have a license.

Well, the largest factor contributing to a death from a motor vehicle crash, when alcohol was not involved, was from an occupant not wearing a seat belt. So, yes you are correct, someone driving irresponsible do cause 50% of crashes, but the majority of THOSE fatalities were the occupants own fault as opposed to drunk drivers who kill indiscriminately.

and no ginger..your question is not insensitive..just real..I have very thick skin if you know what I mean...

no ginger just those who drive drunk (what I think is the context of this bog?)

Slayer, what if you were involved in an accident that caused a fatility? Are you saying that this is what should be the law across the board? No license? Even though it was a true accident? Accidents and accidents involving alcohol are two entirely different scenerios. Like I said, I read Jacks other blog and feel that he HAS learned from his experience (hence the blogs, and I'm sure a whole bunch of stuff that we don't know about) and also know that no accident occured (not that he's disclosed anyway) with his DWI's for which I feel he's truly greatful. Alot of what he's blogged about is the fact that he's basically hoofing it. I didn't think it inappropriate to ask him his opinion about the pink license plate idea that the state is/was considering if it enabled him to get his license back. I apoligize if my question was inappropriate or insensitive. That was not my intent.

Jack, say it louder!!!! I agree that drunks don't need to be on the roads but what about "driving while distracted"? How many times have you seen someone talking on the phone, drinking a coke and handing something to a child! It is dangerous!!!!

I haven't had a DWI but there are times I should be given a ticket for DWD! I am trying to not use my cell or mess with the kids while driving. I would love for everyone to stop texting while driving!!! How dangerous is that!!!
