Cantalope - Squeeze 'em and they should give just a little bit. If it passes that test, smell the stem end (the "navel"). If it smells good (like a cantalope should), it will be ripe. I have given up on watermelons. I guess I've lost my thump.

well I bore a nice sized hole in it ... position it just correctly ... then put the determination meter in it to test the juiciness and softness of the inner contents ... of course the meter has to be plunged in and out to get a proper reading ... before it can be determined if the melon is ripe or not ...

knock knock ... the acidity from the lemon juice prevents them from turning dark so quickly ... you also can use this method with apples

Bananas are easy, you just pull one from the bunch in the store, peel it and take a bite. If it tastes green, try another bunch. Cantaloupes are a bit more challenging. When I no longer see green on the outside skin, and the melon has a strong cantaloupe, smell that is when I cut em open. Honeydew melons: if you rub your hand over the surface and it feels sticky that usually means it is ripe.
