happy birthday grandpa! (on this day in history~1911)
by iluvwilmyPublished Jul. 2, 2008
This is a historical/geneological blog of sorts...I thought I would post this before I leave work for the day.
My grandfather was the best grandpa ever. He was a tall, white-haired, soft-spoken and kind-hearted man. Even though he was soft-spoken and my grandmother was loud, what he said was always the way it was in that household.
I remember riding in his 1970's blue and white Ford pick-up to the store to get snacks for us. He always took the time to watch tv with us or to pick strawberries or blueberries with us and he even took me on a tractor ride once!
He never came out and told us what his favorite show was, but he always was in the house by 7 every night to watch Wheel of Fortune. He broke out the popcorn popper (they didn't have a microwave) and made homemade strawberry slushes for us on a regular basis.
He passed away in 1996 when I was 13 years old from Prostate Cancer. He was 85 years old and his cancer dragged on for almost a decade before he was "taken home". If he was still alive, he would turn 97 today. I only had 13 years to spend with him, and he has been gone 12 years, but I will always remember him like it was yesterday. So, Happy Birthday Grandpa! I hope you are having a great time in heaven watching Wheel of Fortune and eating strawberry slushes...I love you.

He was an orphan and didn't know for sure what his birthday was - just that it was in 1869. So he chose to celebrate it in May on the date the transcontinental railroad was completed in Ogden, Utah.
I still miss the old guy. Nice blog.
