hip displacia?

by Rocknhorse
Published Jul. 2, 2008

The vet told us recently that Abby was showing very early signs of displacia.  I thought this was something that would manifest itself slowly over a period of time.  What's happened is that she hurt her knee running in the yard and now her hips are VERY uncomfortable.  The vet has her on meds right now, and has recommended glucosamine once the meds are finished.

Tyson had his hips checked and the vet offered to certify them.  Since we didn't breed him, we didn't feel any need to have them cert.  But the point is that he never had hip problems.  So this is very new to us.

Anyone familiar/have experience?  Any suggestions, ideas, advice?  What should we expect?

My Roscoe (large yellow lab/great dane) weighed about 175 lbs when he tore ligaments in both his hind legs. He was overweight and too active - I think it was a squirel, anyway, he was about 11 yrs and I couldn't see surgery and recuperation at that stage in life so it was Ascriptin and dog wheels. I was thinking of donating his wheels to NCSU vet college (he left us on 6-21-07 at 13 yrs). I haven't been able to do it yet but visit www.eddieswheels.com if anybody's surgery is out of the question.

Sorry to keep posting but keep having ideas. Rimadyl is still very expensive ~$3/pill unless you get it on line but it does require a prescription from vet. It can be a really good drug or a very bad one I discovered after doing some extensive research when they suggested it for my golden w/ cancer

Pikemom, I think that tylenol is a no-no in dogs. All vets I have ever been to have cautioned me against using it-suggest ascriptin or other coated aspirin, and 325mg is the dose. Here's an article for you. http://www.school-for-champions.com/animalhealth/aspirin.htm

"Do you have doggie insurance?" Unfortunately it has been my experience that if the dog breed is prone to a disease it will not be covered. Had that happen w/ one of my goldens who had a skin tag on eyelid that needed to be removed but when claim submitted they denied it saying goldens were prone to eye issues. This even w/ vet certifying that it WAS NOT genetic. Same thing happened w/ another golden who at 6 months was discovered to have bilateral hip problems and had a femoral headectomy at less than 1 yr. Not covered! If you do have it maybe it's covered now. Good luck w/ it though. Dogs typically can and do live a long time with this it's just painful to watch them decline over time.

I've been told my Max is prone to hip dysplasia because he's a large breed (Lab) and due to his orthopedic history - he had luxating patellas (and the corrective surgery) in both hind legs before he was 15 months old.

The surgeon told us to keep him slightly underweight, to skip a day between dog park visits and to start him on Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplements right away. He's been on them for 2.5 years - he currently takes Dasaquin and there is a big difference in him. He doesn't limp after all day at day care and rain doesn't bother him either.

Good luck and let us know how Abby is doing!

My English Springer Spaniel got hip displacia over time and a med called cardiflex helped her a lot. It may very well have been some form of Glucosamine and chondriotin (which I also use myself). My Coonhound/Catahoula leopard hound had very bad hip displacia when she was about 1 year old. We had to have her operated on. If she had been younger they would have opened the socket, but as it was their only option, other than full hip replacement -- was to remove the round ends (the word I wanted was edited) her femurs. Muscle replaced the "hinge". It was a few weeks of recovery -- but it's amazing the difference. She had been walking like a pirate with a peg leg prior too, or bunny hopping -- and since the surgery she runs like crazy -- she's 3+ now. They told me this procedure is what they sometimes have to resort to if the full replacement doesn't take. Best of luck to you. Keep your dogs weight down and try the meds. It might just be all you ever need to do!

My vet said no tylenol either. Baby aspirin is ok, but not tylenol

you need to look into a hip replacement at nc state vet school...you need to use glucosomine, chrondroitin and msm. the food with glucosomine doesnt have enough to make a difference.

at one time we had 3 Aussies, and they were prescribed rimadyl. Worked wonders on all 3. It was very expensive (10 years ago) but well worth it for their sakes.

Glucosamine usually works very well. Our dearly loved Chesepeake Bay had hip dysplacia from the time she was around 2yrs old. Our vet was wonderful with her as well as our boarding place. Give her fish oil in her food, and if your dog likes to swim let them as much as possible. It's a good non-stress exercise for them. Don't have them jumping for treats/toys too much, they can over do it, and really hurt the next day. It's way more common than most people think due to in-breading. Best of luck and prayers for you and your best friend.
