depression scrip
Published Jul. 2, 2008It's bad out there for a lot of people, but it's nothing like the Great Depression.
Unemployment is about 5 percent today, which a lot of economists would say is "full" employment or darn near close. In November 1933, the unemployment rate reached 23 percent.
We also were fighting severe deflation back then, and a lot of communities created their own local currencies. Click here for DepressionScrip.com, which shows some of those local currencies. Click on "United States" to see some of North Carolina's Depression-era local currencies, including some from Fayetteville, Carthage and Guilford County.
