wolfpack fans, remember you share a fight song tune!
Published Jul. 2, 2008Since this is the fouth of July week I thought I would repost this.
The fight song in question uses the same tune as the US Army hymn “Caissons go rolling along”(link to song below). There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, there are plenty of borrowed tunes in use by sports teams and I think this one fits well in the role of a pep song. My problem is that at any event in this area where “Caissons go rolling along” is played, say for example the 4th of July or Memorial day, there are people who assume for whatever reason that the band is honoring NCSU so they shout “Go State!” at the specified place(even though the pause for that is less pronounced in "Cassions").
I am a fairly observant person and when this has happened (and it always does) I sincerely get the impression that most of the people shouting "Go State!" think the band is playing the State fight song and aren’t just doing it to be cute or funny. I was inspired to write when a friend who is a State graduate brought this very subject up recently after attending an event(it might have been a funeral!) where “Caissons” was played. I won’t use his exact words but let’s just say he referred to his fellow fans who shouted “Go State!” during “Caissons” as not being very bright.
Maybe we have reached the point where many people don’t know about “Caissons go rolling along” but I would think most should understand that if the event is related to the military or some national celebration it’s a safe bet that a college team fight song will not be on the play list right after "Anchors Aweigh". I would also think that common sense you would say that you only want to shout “Go State!” when the event has something to do with Wolfpack sports.
I really hope I don’t make anybody mad writing about this and if I offended someone I am sorry in advance. There are certainly plenty of similar sports fans stories from all spectrums. I’m just doing some therapeutic venting at the end of frazzled week.
In case you were unaware, here is the Army song;

I agree with what you have said in this last post. It is well thought out and makes sense. However your first post reflects none of that. While an understanding of music and fashion would HELP someone to understand a period of time, lacking that knowledge certainly does not make a person an "ignorant moron" with respect to that same period of time. I realize this is generalizing - but for the sake of argument - I believe that a studious high school history student knows more about the sixties than someone who wears tie-dyes & bellbottoms and listens to the Woodstock album.
And FWIW, for you to insult me because I disagree with your poorly thought out post, challenging a sweeping generalization of an entire generation based on your own criteria does not reflect on my intelligence, it reflects on yours.

Music and fashion and much more are a reflection of cultural values and events that shaped our history. Sure you can memorize names, dates, places, and titles for events, but then all you will know and understand is names, dates, places, and titles for events.
History is far more than that and takes a comprehensive understanding of the policics, sociology, economics, theology, and ethos of a culture to understand.
Then again, if you are not one of those who understands all those thing, they you probably aren't bright enough to even realize how much you don't know.

Good call. Everyone knows (except the younger generation - they are ignorant morons) that intelligence and knowledge of US history can be summed up by one's appreciation of music and fashion prior to 1970.

I run into a lot of teens and we get into discussions about US history. They have no clue about music prior to what they are listening to now with certain exceptions for some 80 hard rock that their parents listened to while they were growing up.
They certainly have no idea of any music from prior to 1970 or anything at all that did not crack the Billboard Top 10. They know nothing of fashion, nothing of food, nothing of life before modern technology, and nothing of the society from which they came. They think our generation is worthless because we do not embrace the illigimate uses of the technology WE invented and they misuse.
We have allowed the breeding of an entire generation of ignorant morons who are about to drag us into oblivion.
