chicken update

Published Jul. 2, 2008

Wanted to share this with y'all.  Alexandria Reid, the lady in Sanford with the chickens contacted me via e-mail and let me tell you, this has been one busy lady!  Following is some of the things she's been working on this week.  She's organized her group called CLUCKs, Citizens for the Legalization of Urban Chicken Koops.  She's drumming up local, national and special interest (Rachel Ray on the health benefits of the eggs, etc) attention.  A forum called Backyard Chickens is supporting her cause and a local daycare is making egg shaped signs for a peaceful protest she's planning.  She hopes to have 100 people at the next council meeting and the media.  I've asked her to call me and let me know how I can help and I'll pass that along when I hear from her.  I'm sure a big shout-out on GOLO will be helpful!  The next council meeting is scheduled for July 15th however, she's hoping that all the attention she's received so far will sway the council before that.  I'll keep you posted on this mission and I get more information.

I have had chickens in Sanford for 12 years. Been lucky I guess. No complaints. My coop doesn't smell even in the summer. My problem with Alex's proposed rules is the 50 feet minimum. Hard to meet on some smaller or more narrow lots. I only have one house actually adjoining me, but it would be hard to get 50 feet from both our houses. 30 feet is more reasonable and would open chicken-raising up to more people. But the first step is to get the hard-headed council to even take this under consideration. I don't know who this "majority" is that they speak of, but how can they know that if it isn't even looked into? I haven't heard or seen anyone speak against the chickens.

i too have chickens. i am in suburban li, ny. no neighbor has complained about my chickens as i keep them clean and quiet and more importantly they eat the ticks that are overwhelming in this area preventing the need to spray for them. eggs and meat are a bonus for us. i am allowed to have hens but no rooster that crows. i do not see the problem with the compromise that ms reid is proposing. many cities and towns across the us have similar ordinances. at the rate food and gas is going up, expect more small flocks and other animals raised for food. we are in desperate times. we also raise veggies. please consider also the children that have an enormous emotional investment in show birds like these. these are kids that are not out misbehaving or becoming couch potatoes. they are learning to have self sufficiency, motivation, responsibility, respect for animals, as well as now more about gov't regulations and how the gov't works. thank you for considering my points.

the family only has hens. you do not need a rooster to have eggs! most cities allow hens but not roosters. if anyone one would like more info on the care of chickens or just about anything about them check out backyardchickens.com.

Forgot the link to the video. Here it is:

I think anyone commenting to this thread, should watch the video WRAL made about this family's birds. Is this family's coop backed up to some neighbor's house. Do you hear hundreds of crowing roosters in the background? Their chicken coop is well built and well located.

Alex is doing a great job by rewriting the codes to be less "one-sided" than the current ones. She is trying to make this a win-win situation for both poultry keepers and non-poultry keepers. I believe she should be supported by both.

ncmom... that was a joke, referencing the "bubb rubb" phenomenon. go youtube for bubb rubb, it is hilarious! :)

They should change the code to allow chickens. I live in Fayetteville and we are allowed chickens here. Alex is willing to rewrite the code to support both the chicken keeper AND the neighbor's in mind. My dogs and cats smell much, MUCH worse than my chickens. We never had complaints from the neighbors. Neighborhood dogs are much more dangerous and loud than chickens. I think the city should allow her to change the codes.

To be completely honest, I can't wait to move. I plan to have chickens. I plan to have a huge garden. And I'll have horses. I will still rely on stores, but I'm looking forward to being able to rely on me and the land a bit more than I can now, especially with the economy/gas prices... Just like NCMOM said, this family has found a creative way to have pets that provide for the family. And no one has noticed in 3 years? Leave them alone and go find the real problems in the area.

concerned citizen? concerned about what, I have to wonder

Gingerleigh 225; the violation was reported by a concernened citizen and the ordinance has been in effect since 1997.
