!x! clogged up vacuum cleaner !x!

I am so blasted tired of a clogged vacuum cleaner. Can anyone suggest a GOOD, cheap vacuum cleaner. It takes longer to unclog the thing than it does to vacuum.
current one is about 5 years old: Kenmore, quick clean from Sears.

My carpet is a tan color (will be replacing soon) and my LR furniture is bright red so they show everything.

Believe me, I wouldn't have picked it. It's a rental, so I got stuck with what was already here when I moved in. If it were up to me, I'd have hardwood or tile everywhere.
