surpise! socks made in the usa!

Published Jul. 1, 2008

The wife and kids asked me to come along on one of my least favorite activities; shopping at Target on a Saturday. I grumbled a little but in the interest of family time and fellowship I went along.  They do pay a price for my companionship. Whenever I am in a place like Target I make a point to show them where most of the products we buy are made. Most the time the answer is obvious, China, China and China. They find it irritating but I guess my sweet smile makes it all worth it :-).

My son and I were shopping for socks, and he grimaced at me for pointing out some socks made in Malaysia. I was about to annoy him some more when to my shock(and his relief) I saw the rare “Made in the USA” stamp on a pack of Hanes socks. Upon further review I noted that the whole rack of Hanes socks had “Made in the USA” on them. That was the first time in eons that I had seen finished textile products made in the USA at a big box store (understanding that I avoid box stores as often as I can).

I would love to believe that this is a trend and there will be more such products but reality tells me it is probably a remnant. For now I give kudos to Hanes Inc for making a product in this country.

That's a start. The question is were they made by Americans? I try to buy quality American products when I can, but that is becoming more and more difficult. Almost nothing is manufactured in this country anymore.

How could you not like Target? Next time, go to the one at Crossroads in Cary. The place is Hooterville. Seriously, no matter what time you go, the place is crawling with major league, hot babes.

Half of my family lives in Alamance county. I used to live there too. Back in the day, everybody, and their mama worked in textiles. But, I guess you cant blame the companies. I mean, here in the us they were paying the average employee $300 to $450 a WEEK. And in other countries they pay $3 to $7 dollars a day.

hahaha... good dad! i've always been conscious of sweatshops, but i went to an awesome seminar on greening the print industry. now i'm inflicting my hippie-esque beliefs on my clients, but the few cents more you pay per piece makes it completely worth buying... knowing that your product wasn't created by kids in a third world country. my stepdad worked in a mill from the time he was 5 years old, and the stories he told me rocked my world. buying responsibly certainly limits your selections, but i sleep a little better at night.

Hane's rock!

you sound like a fun guy

Hane's it is then. I always try to buy "made in the USA". Getting more and more difficult though.

i remember when textiles ruled in nc....long gone are those days
