the tradition of easter eggs

Published Jun. 26, 2008

Christians celebrate Easter to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Some aspects of modern Easter celebrations, however, pre-date Christianity.

Ancient Spring Goddess

According to the Venerable Bede, Easter derives its name from Eostre, an Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring. A month corresponding to April had been named "Eostremonat," or Eostre's month, leading to "Easter" becoming applied to the Christian holiday that usually took place within it. Prior to that, the holiday had been called Pasch (Passover), which remains its name in most non-English languages.

(Based on the similarity of their names, some connect Eostre with Ishtar, the Babylonian and Assyrian goddess of love and fertility, but there is no solid evidence for this.)

It seems probable that around the second century A.D., Christian missionaries seeking to convert the tribes of northern Europe noticed that the Christian holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus roughly coincided with the Teutonic springtime celebrations, which emphasized the triumph of life over death. Christian Easter gradually absorbed the traditional symbols.

Easter Eggs

In Medieval Europe, eggs were forbidden during Lent. Eggs laid during that time were often boiled or otherwise preserved. Eggs were thus a mainstay of Easter meals, and a prized Easter gift for children and servants.

In addition, eggs have been viewed as symbols of new life and fertility through the ages. It is believed that for this reason many ancient cultures, including the Ancient Egyptians, Persians, and Romans, used eggs during their spring festivals.

Many traditions and practices have formed around Easter eggs. The coloring of eggs is a established art, and eggs are often dyed, painted, and otherwise decorated. Eggs were also used in various holiday games: parents would hide eggs for children to find, and children would roll eggs down hills. These practices live on in Easter egg hunts and egg rolls. The most famous egg roll takes place on the White House lawn every year.

The Easter Bunny

Hares and rabbits have long been symbols of fertility. The inclusion of the hare into Easter customs appears to have originated in Germany, where tales were told of an "Easter hare" who laid eggs for children to find. German immigrants to America -- particularly Pennsylvania -- brought the tradition with them and spread it to a wider public. They also baked cakes for Easter in the shape of hares, and may have pioneered the practice of making chocolate bunnies and eggs.

This was a common practice, the adding of other traditions to your own. It happened in music all the time. Still does. Puff Daddy/PDiddy has more then likely never written an original piece of music... the art of troping... (Although as far as PDiddy goes, one hopes the trope has something to offer, other then desecration.)

good information. i enjoyed reading this.

nothing says i love Jesus like an egg. a chicken egg. ok now im confused.

ptahandatum,

where'd you get that info from concerning the resurrection?

Well, back in the day also, i studied the greek, hebrew, caldean and amaeric languages of the bible.I did this for about 5 years. The more i dug into it, the more research i had to do on similar topics pertaining to it.for instance, i often wondered wht the word "easter" was only listed in the bible once.Well, in that time period, the seaon or paschal, or what they celebrate now, passover, was celebrated around the sametime. you have to remember, chrisitns were out numbered then and more related to the time of ishtar than that of what we know now as passover. That was my conclusion to why the word Easter, was added. anyway you look at the old text, you cannot derrive the word "easter" from the original text Paschal. however you can derrive the word Passover from it :) lawdy im babbling again :P

I am have always heard this Christian legend:

Tradition relates, that in Italy Mary Magdalene visited the Emperor Tiberias (14-37 AD) and proclaimed to him about Christ's Resurrection. According to tradition, she took him an egg as a symbol of the Resurrection, a symbol of new life with the words: "Christ is Risen!" Then she told Tiberias that, in his Province of Judea, Jesus the Nazarene, a holy man, a maker of miracles, powerful before God and all mankind, was executed on the instigation of the Jewish High-Priests and the sentence affirmed by the procurator Pontius Pilate. Tiberias responded that no one could rise from the dead, anymore than the egg she held could turn red. Miraculously, the egg immediately began to turn red as testimony to her words. Then, and by her urging, Tiberias had Pilate removed from Jerusalem to Gaul, where he later suffered a horrible sickness and an agonizing death.

Cotton - interesting - I was looking for an answer to why we colored eggs at Easter... Many of the Christian celebrations were derived from other cultures and beliefs. Makes taking over easier when you have some things in common...

i have also read where different colored eggs were handed out to everyone who celebrated the season of ishtar, the goddess of fertility. and those with alike eggs, participated in " acts" of fertility with one another, be it same gender or not.

Funny thing about the resurrection: No one by the name of jesus, jesus christ, jesus creustus, jesus ben joseph or any derivation thereof ever died on a cross or on a tree. It plain didn't happen.
