texas wind power?

Well, this is unexpected - by me at least:
(CNN) -- Billionaire oilman T. Boone Pickens is sinking billions of dollars into a new wind farm in Texas. It is likely to become the biggest in the world, producing enough power for the equivalent of 1.3 million homes.
This guy is one of Bush's best supporters, and the lead financier behind the Swift Boat Vets. An old-school Texas oilman...Now he is embracing Wind Power? Maybe he smells a new source of profits. He is having the wind farms constructed on other people's land (he thinks they are an eyesore) Supposedly the landowner will receive royalties of up to $20,000 per year per turbine! Wow. The plan is to build these windfarms out to the point where they can supply 4000 megawatts.

It can’t provide baseload or peak demand. Wind will not make significant reduction in NO or SO2, and impact on CO2 emissions is miniscule.
It will have NO effect on US energy independence, not the 1% of oil used for electricity, and the US is independent on electrical power already.
It does and will increase the cost of electricity.
Those few towers look interesting, but they would eventually use up a hundred times the land of current coal plants.
Environmentalists will object to the loss of wildlife, birds and bats. Noise will keep homes at least a mile away. We know tourism in the mountains and coast will be affected adversely.
Wind energy will hopefully be able to produce up to 20% of our current level of use by 2030.
Much of that is good reason to go off shore, but still close enough to population centers. It will help, but isn't the fix.

it is funny though, when I see environmentalist's eyes get wide and jaws drop and seems confused when a conservative person does something environmental. It is as if they think that conservatives and businessmen aren't concerned about the enviornment. Which is NOT true.
It is also amazing - this very article is PROOF that if you let the market do its thing, business will start competing for being the first out with some type of alternative fuel.
You don't have to legislate mandates on them and force huge taxes to get them to do it. In fact - THAT has proven to NOT work. This has been being done for almost 20 years... and we dont have ANY YET!
