illegals--go home: blog illegals--go home's blog
toby
Published Jun. 23, 2008I have a predicament here and it's getting very expensive, but need feedback from any viewers with similar experiences.
I rescued this adorable little guy, TOBY, from the pound 4 months ago and everything was going great! About 5 weeks ago, he came down with the "red mange", an inherited condition.
The first vet I took him to gave me antibiotics for the inflammation and told me to bring him in for a dip in a week and that I would have to have him dipped each week for between 10 and 20 weeks to get rid of it and then he might have to be on maintenance meds for his entire life. She sent me home with this little guy itching like crazy with no meds for that and expected his wounds to heal from the antibiotics I guess!!! A dog that itches will keep scratching. To say the least, I was pissed off and started searching the web for my own answers.
After a day of searching and one afternoon of talking to hunting dog owners, I learned about ivomec (don't quote me on the spelling) which works remarkedly well to quickly bring the rash down. I also learned you can give a dog benedryl!! So, my little fellow started getting better quickly. However, it came right back as soon as I stopped with the ivomec!!
Today he got neutered and the vet I took him to (not the same as the first one) told me that the wrong dosage of ivomec could blow out his kidneys and that you have to give him a certain dosage for 30 straight days and then do a new scraping to see if the mites are gone, and if not, you do another 30 days and check again.
If anyone out there has a dog suffering from this inherited nightmare, please share your experiences and let me know what to expect. He just turned 6 months old this past Saturday.
Thanks!!

Pretty little pup - I will see if I can find the name for it...
Another poster wrote about motor oil - it works on the same idea. I have seen that used before also.
I have a good friend that is a working vet that is 85 years old. I will try and ask him for you.

Yes, he could stand to lose a "little energy" as he is wide open all the time.....wish I could bottle and sell the energy he has!!! However, someone told me it might even make him more hyper and I don't know if I can stand it!!
Thanks for all the quick responses.....I am taking them all in. The second vet seems like she truly cares what happens to him as I feel like the first one only cared about how much money she could make. I don't mind spending the money when I know it will help, but the first one didn't seem to care how badly he was feeling at all. The second sat down with me and talked to me as if this dog was my son instead of my pet!! Of course, at my house, the pets get treated just as good........LOL.

this site is actually much better, and it recommends mitaban...i have used it, and it works, but is quiet expensive.
it says ivermectin will work, but may take up to a year.
i recommend giving the nc state vet school a call if you can to see what they say.
