my dvd recorder died

I need some suggestions on good dvd recorders (name and model number please) since mine decided to bite the dust last night. Or suggestions on ones to stay away from.
I do NOT want a Sony... the last 2 I have had were Sony's and I do not wish to go that route again.
I do not need anything real fancy... just a dvd recorder to record my tv shows.
1. Harddrive is optional, but the more I read, the more I think I would like one with it.
2. Should record on all formats: dvd+/-r or +/-rw is all I need.
3. An internal tuner would be wonderful so I can watch other shows on the TV while it is recording something else, but this is not a deal breaker since the Sony I have/had did not allow this.
4. I have cable, so do not need a digital tuner which I see some have now to pull in the over the air digital channels.
5. The one I have now is 17" wide, but could go up to about 20" wide.
So let me hear some good suggestions, brand and model numbers please, to start looking for.

I had to order it online and have it shipped to the store, but that is ok. Good news is, if I don't like it, I can return it there too ;-)
