trip across the u.s... on a scooter!
Published Jun. 23, 2008A Trip across the U.S. on a scooter.. Thats right folks, I know this sounds crazy so bear with me.
As some of you may know I am an avid motorcyclist, no not like the local Dr. that rides his harley on sunday.. I own a Dual Sport motorcycle that is capable of on and off road travel. I have over the years managed a trip to Labrador City, And many trips to places like West fer by god virginia, and even into our local areas. Motorcycling has some deep roots for me, as I grew up racing dirt bikes as a kid, and ALOT of family time was spent on Motorcycles riding with my dad and brother.
So back to the Original topic, I have been following this story of a Korean man that came into the U.S. and Rode his Ruckus scooter from Fayetville, NC all the way around the U.S.! Now folks, travelling on a MOTORCYCLE is NOTHING like riding in your SUV or car.. Riding a scooter is like NEITHER! Anyway this guy named Wan, finally has fufilled his dream and I wanted to share some of his triumphs and failures along his way. Wan came to the U.S. on some kind of temporary VISA that allowed him to stay for 2 years(or there abouts), and his only dream was to see the entire U.S. before he had to return. He worked in a Resturant saving up his money with the Intention's of buying a motorcycle and driving around the U.S. but quickly learned that with all of the Drivers license requirements, insurance cost, etc.. that he could never afford it. Wan settled for a Ruckus Scooter, which is a VERY SMALL scooter capable of about 40 MPH (with the wind, going down hill, lol). Wan Left Fayetville, NC and headed south into south carolina, Georgia, Florida, and then over through Lousiana, Ole Miss, Texas, and into California and from there he came back across into New York and back down to NC.
Wan is now leaving the U.S. but he has one thing left up his sleeve that he wants to see/do while in the U.S.
Wan is GRACIOUSLY holding a raffle for his Round the U.S. Scooter, and wants to take all of that money and donate it to "Make a Wish" foundation! Wan has said that the feeling of being able to complete his lifetime dream was inmeasurable, and he wants others to feel this feeling. Make a Wish foundation has said that it takes an average of 6900.00 to provide a child with their "wish". So far Wan's scooter has received 2,300 + dollars in donations!
So like the Picture says.. Sometimes it takes a korean to remind us what America is!

What a cool thing to do. How many Americans take time to pause from the non-stop effort of making a living and really take the time to live? I admire Wan for that.
On a lighter note: I'll bet Wan's but looks like a camels knee after that long of a ride, thought. ;-)
