north carolina senator defaults on home loan

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina state senator and her former domestic partner have defaulted on a $1.3 million mortgage on a New Hanover County home.
Sen. Julia Boseman and Melissa Jarrell have failed to pay the $7,156 monthly payments since last August, according to evidence at a court hearing last week. The home is now scheduled to be auctioned June 25 at the county courthouse, the Star-News of Wilmington reported.
County tax records show $4,700 in taxes are also owed on the property. Jarrell now lives in the house, where they raised a son before separating.
The loan could still be paid off or other arrangements may be made with the lender before the sale, said Wilmington attorney Jim Bonner, who represents the substitute trustee handling the foreclosure.
Boseman transferred the property to Jarrell in April, essentially removing her name from the title. Boseman said she hadn't lived there in more than two years.
Boseman, a Democrat who is seeking a third Senate term in November, also testified during a December child custody hearing that she had used marijuana earlier this decade, according to a transcript of the hearing obtained by Wilmington television station WECT.
Under sworn testimony, Boseman told her lawyer that there were problems with drugs during the relationship.
"In probably September of 2003, is when Melissa walked in and I was smoking marijuana. At that point, I went to counseling to try to get help with that and other problems," Boseman was quoted as saying. Boseman testified in the hearing that she had not used any illegal drugs since 2003.
In 2003, Boseman served as a New Hanover County commissioner. She was elected to the Senate in late 2004.
Boseman declined to comment about the transcript to WECT. She didn't return phone messages Monday night left by The Associated Press at her legislative office or her law office in Wilmington. A home telephone number listed in a legislative directory went unanswered.
Boseman told the Star-News last week the mortgage default was a private matter that wouldn't affect work for her constituents.
Even though NC is in better shape than a lot of places, I guess no one is immune from this crisis. How long do you think before the housing market turns for the better?

If President Bush gets behind on his payments we might get RENT and MORTGAGE free for a couple of months....
