how much?
Published Jun. 18, 2008Steves blog got me thinking (and mad, but thats ok).
How much do you get paid? What type of job do you have? How much traning and education do you have? How much PAID vacation do you get? Are you penalized if you USE that vacation? How many years of service?
How many (and this is the kicker for me) PEOPLE do you HELP on a DAILY basis? WHAT impact do you have on their life? Is it long term impact, or short term? Positive, or negative? Are you 'worth' your salary?
I am a public school teacher, working and attneding workshops over my summer break, can only take vacation when there are no students at school, and often have 4-5 days a year to work at the school on days I am not 'getting paid' for. I take LOTS of work home (papers to grades, lessons to plan) and spend plenty of my personal $ on materials. I know, I know, I get that 'tax deduction' for teachers, but be for real, how much difference does that make? MAYBE a $40 difference in my tax return? I impact the lives of about 65 students DIRECTLY over the time of a semester, so around 110-120 students PER YEAR that spend more time with me than they do with their parents sometimes. I am an adviser, a supporter, a friend, and an educator. I attend staff development on my days off, all to make myself a better teacher. If I push just 1 student that would have been a drop out to push ahead, overcome, and suceed I have affected that persons current family, future family, the community, county, and state.
And I AM NOT worth what I get PAID Steve and others???? Get over yourselves! Visit a public school, sit in classes on regular basis and SEE what goes on. TALK to a teacher for a year or so (over summer) and see what you think.

My husband gets 6 weeks paid and 9 sick days paid and 8 holiday days, all paid. His salary is over 55k, no college, all self taught. He works in RTP , not going to say the company. He's been with the company 5 yrs.
We volunteer at church on a regular basis , we also donate money to several charities

Like I said, I wasn't comparing the two professions...just stating that the folks who should be making more money aren't and folks that get to "play" a job get everything handed to em. And then you have to listen to em whine when they want to renegotiate a contract they willingly signed.
Oh I got an idea...let's propose windfall taxes on the sports owners so we can fund teaching? You know if it's suggested for big oil why not other businesses??

I don't think strolling and I were trying to make a comparrison rather just stating a fact. Most people don't get upset that T.O., Romo, Bryant, Garnet, A-Rod, Palpelbon make millions to run, throw, shoot, or hit a ball. But then you have folks that get upset because teachers ask for raises and the government wants to raise taxes to fund that.
