house: we passed!
Published Jun. 13, 2008We had our re-inspection today for electrical, mechanical and exterior. All three passed. Our siding was delivered today, so installation will begin monday.
We got our logs for our fireplaces today. We ran into some stumps about the fireplace in our bedroom. Apparently we couldn't do vent-free b/c it was a bedroom. We couldn't do vented and vent straight b/c it would go through our daughter's closet and if we wanted to do flex venting, we were told we'd have to remove the entire brick fireplace and do an insert. So...we got an electric log set.
I wasn't sure what I'd think. I mean, electric logs? It could not possibly look real, right? Wrong! It's pretty cool! We plugged it in and viola! Fire!
We'll be working all weekend getting the framing issues completed so we can get that re-inspection. I spoke with the lead inspector for the county today about the stairs. I think we have a solution that works for both of us. Thank goodness!
Anyway, that's the latest news.

Structural things are always a problem. And they can be expensive, too.
If you had continued to have problems, I was going to recommend steel. A steel framing member at the break line for the upper floor can be MUCH smaller and have the same strength. It looked like you needed only a few extra inches.
Now that I think about it, I may should have re-phrased that last line ....
