take my car? The anti-lock light is on on the instrument panel. Lord knows, I don't want to go to the dealership! It's a Mitsubishi Montero Sport. Thanks for any advice you can give me!

I feel your pain Mizzz...I wish I could help yu with something like this...But it's harder and harder to get good service anywhere these days. Hopefully someone will point you in a good direction!

Mizzeta, I don't know if you do any off-roading or not, but the most common cause of the ABS light coming on is dirty sensors. If you know someone who is mechanically inclined they can clean those sensors at the wheels and it won't cost you a dime, or maybe just a six pack. If that doesn't work I would recommend the dealership. Brakes aren't something you want a jack-leg working on and the techs at the dealership know what to look for and may find other problems that you weren't aware of. I worked at a dealership for about a year and got to know the techs. They were all very knowledgeable and honest. They actually got graded on the job they did and it could actually affect their pay. Yes, strolling. I do things like the A/C service, oil changes, etc. at places like Jiffy Lube or Firestone. I'm concerned about this repair because they have to be able to diagnose the error code properly.

nooooooooooooooooooooo my advice was bad....check with another place...on price....i just called subbie place to get a/c refilled....takes an hour...charges $130.00 bucks....called a jiffy lube....takes 1/2 hours...costs...$30.00 bucks. I ask the jiffy lube guy ..not to be a smart but....but why the difference...he said he couldnt figure it out....he makes money at 30 bucks....check the prices....life is too expensive to spend freely

Ok, I just called the dealership. They can't take my car today, but they can take it Monday. I spoke with the service manager. He said the car's driveable with the Anti-Lock light on because I have fully functional brakes. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to offer helpful advice.

Electronic failures on newer cars are sometimes best left for a dealer to repair. Sometimes dealers are higher, but not always. You may only have a bad wheel sensor, that is most common with an ABS light. (It counts the individual wheel revolutions- in other words, it senses a wheel locking up, and sends that info to the control unit, and activates the ABS.) A reputable shop will have the equipment nessessary to capture the failure code. If you do not have a regular independent shop you go to, take it to the dealer. Walmart, Pepboys et al will not cut it on this one, bunch of jacklegs are at those places. Bite the bullet and GET YOUR BRAKES FIXED.

You did not indicate the age or mileage of your car so this may or may not apply . . . but contact the dealership first.

Sometimes there are bulletins or campaigns that the manufacturer has released to the dealership when they know they have a problem with certain items. In the event that there is an open campaign that fits the year of your car mileage will usually not matter, it would be fixed free to you as the manufacturer will pay the dealership.

If the repair is going to be on your dime and your resourses are limited - - talk with the Service Manager BEFORE the work is done and try to negotiate a dollar figure less than the posted labor rate.

He or she will not jump to reduce this amount, but if you run up on the right person, and your case is legitimate and sincere many times they will accommodate if they are in a position to do so.

Most of the time the Service Manager / Director does have the authority to adjust pricing.

rabid!! Are you my mechanic? I swear my antilock break light was on, and I took him my van, I paid him over $300 to fix it, and they did seem fixed, but the dang light was still on! I took the car back 3 times, and he finaly told me,"IF THE LIGHT IS BOTHERING YOU THAT MUCH, THEN JUST PUT A PEICE OF TAPE OVER IT!!!" LOL! He said the breaks were fine & he couldnt figure out why the light stayed on.
