wilmington, nc - first in digital

The greater Wilmington, North Carolina area will make its transition to digital broadcasting on September 8, 2008. Starting at noon on September 8, the following TV stations in the Wilmington area will broadcast only digital signals.
- Channel 3 WWAY ABC
- Channel 6 WECT NBC
- Channel 10 WILM CBS
- Channel 26 WSFX FOX
- Channel 51 W51CW Trinity
WUNJ channel 39 (PBS) will continue to broadcast both analog and digital signals. W47CK Channel 29,(MyNetwork TV), will continue to broadcast its analog signal after September 8. Wilmington, NC is a test market for the shut down of analog broadcasting which will occur by February 17, 2009 throughout the rest of the country.

I think everyone should just get a HDTV and everyone is satisfied. I pick up about 40ish channels via over the air HD...cant beat that...I still have cable, cause the kids wanted their cartoon channels...but still...

Why does it always take forever and a day for new (worthwhile) technologies to make it mainstream?
I just can't wait for the BIG waves to be open soon, I already have a new concept for a chunk of that bandwidth that may bring tablet computing (and digitial media) to the masses. I've coined it "SmartPaper" for now. (think something like the LCARS PADD from StarTrek TNG, only paper thin and flexible to boot. *wink*)
