do you like the clayton bypass?

Published Jun. 10, 2008

We were watching the cameras along I-40 West near the new Clayton Bypass merge this morning...and saw a bunch of people stuck in traffic!

Did you get delayed this morning?  Or did the Bypass save you some time?  We're working on a story for our evening newscasts, and we'd like to hear from you.  You can e-mail me at bshrader@wral.com.

Very good, it helps. Commute is reduce, and way fewer lights! Theres ALWAYS delays at 40/42. Really, what are people living further south than that even going to Raleigh for? Get a life, people!

Went on it again this morning, was highly impressed. Smooth flow onto 40 from it, speed steady at 70. Hope it stays that way.

Yes. When the pros and cons are weighed, the bypass has many more "pros" on its side.

Well, thank you NCDOT! Thanks for creating yet another bottleneck on the busiest road in the Triangle. It is really an injustice that they opened this project without making improvements to I-40 first. Now they have added it to thier plan, but there is no funding, which means it will maybe get built in 10 years maybe. I hope that all of you that use the bypass enjoy your new road, you just ruined the commute of everyone that was using I-40 before. Thanks NCDOT! Great Job!

Thanks, everyone!

I tried it this morning and it was as I expected when I saw the layout in the newspaper. The ride from Johnston County to I-40 was very fast and smooth, but dumping two lanes of traffic into I-40 where there is only two lanes created a bottle neck effect. So the time saved on the bypass was taken back on the four mile stretch of 5 to 10 mph traffic. As we approached the section of I-40 where the third lane is open we were then moving right along again.

The by-pass saved me about 15 minutes getting home yesterday afternoon and about 10 minutes coming to work this morning. As Ashen said, there was a "delay" where 70 dumped onto 40, but I was expecting that because it's 40 and there are always delays on 40 LOL. Also, people need to merge onto 40 sooner, instead of waiting until the last minute, like they do everywhere...those 2 extra lanes from 70 do not "magically" continue into Raleigh.

Overall, I'm very happy with the new by-pass. Thanks DOT!!

I was watching a bunch of people watching a bunch of news crews covering a bunch of people watching a bunch of news crews.

Once people get used to it I think it will be a great road to travel. Saves me 12 miles in the daily commute. Hopefully it will ease the traffic on 70bus so that it is not such a hassle to go into Clayton in the afternoons, and ease it around exit 312, where I always feared crashes due to the amount of traffic at that exit.
