Published Jun. 9, 2008Well it had to happen...I got sent to TX to fight fire and a large fire breaks out back home after I leave. I'll be home in a week so I'm sure I'll be sent to the coast as well. BTW this is the biggest Fire NC has had since a 73,000 acre fire near Topsail in 1986. The last REALLY large fire in Hyde/Washington/Tyrell county was in 1985 and it burned 95,000 acres. That area has a history of large fires. If anyone cares here is an old study done on the area in 1973

It's a large pdf file(4-5 mb) but is intresting...esp page 5. I did get on a 45,000 acre fire last Thurs-Sat in the guadalupe mtns in far west TX and that was an experiance!!! Well ya'll takem easy!!!

I don’t envy anyone that’s a firefighter on a day like today, especially a woods fire.
Be careful out there and be sure the fingers never leave the hands ....
