kiss the girl

Published Jun. 9, 2008

I was catching up on my blog reading today when I came across go georgia tech's blog from earlier today.  Basically, it brought up the question of what to say to your child when you are confronted with a situation that's inappropriate for their age.

This is the PERFECT time to instill YOUR values in your child.  You don't have to be politically correct, you don't have to agree with your friends, family or media.  I feel like we have become so sensitive to people's rights to do what they want, that we fail to instill our own beliefs in our family.  While I feel that, for the most part, whatever someone else wants to do with their life is fine, I feel it's my responsibility to teach my children what I think is right and wrong.  That particular blog was about 2 girls kissing.  Well, I think that's wrong.  I don't approve and I don't want my children to think that is normal.  It's MY job to teach them that.  When they are older, they can reevaluate and make their own decisions.

So, do you teach what's socially acceptable and politically correct, or do you stand up for your beliefs and teach your children what you think is right.

Glad I could help Wheat, LOL! I had a friend commit suicide when I was young over this issue, so I take it seriously. Too many parents don't think about what they are saying to their kids and how it could come back to bite them. Kids don't want to disappoint their parents and will act out in other ways. Sadly for my friend, death was a better option (at 16) than admitting the truth to his parents :(

yes chris very well put. wow i was looking for those words...never make judgement on anyone

There are also parents that tell their kids homosexuality is wrong and they imply those people are bad, going to hell, etc. without really talking to their kids. Those are the kids that are terrified of telling their parents they are gay, and terrified of telling them other things. I think there are ways you can teach your kids values without passing judgement and leaving the lines of communication open. Sadly, just telling kids "don't do that" doesn't work for most these days, the lines of communication have to open and stay open, removing judgement leaves the lines open as they grow into adulthood.

very well said lawpirate. I totally agree. Some children yes you do try your hardest to let them know how your "beliefs" are. But as they grow older I feel they have the right to make their own decisions. Whether we like their decsions or not we are still going to love them

ok sorry, i get easily sidetracked.

motormonkey this blog is not about being gay.

I'd like to think that we continually grow and learnfrom ourselves and from past generations. I think we can be tolerant of some things even though we may not agree or approve of those things. For example, you may not condone homosexuality right now, but if your child grew up and told you they were, you would probably reevaluate your beliefs. However, if you don't condone, for example, the behavior of the girls on Girls Gone Wild and your child grows up to appear in a video, you probably wouldn't reevaluate how you felt about it. You would probably still be upset about it.

So, everyone has to decide for himself at some point what they believe is right or wrong. As a parent, it is your duty to teach your child what YOU think is right or wrong and not what society condones. They will learn that lesson without you.

A thought occured to me based on another comment I saw earlier: if a guy thinks two girls kissing is ok, maybe even likes it, does that make him gay?

well doctor. Its not wrong if someone feels its right. Yes im a great parent but i would never tell my child it was wrong to be gay if they were gay. stop yelling already

Who are we to say what's wrong......WE ARE THE PARENTS, IT IS OUR JOB TO CONVEY TO OUR CHILDREN WHAT IS RIGHT AND WRONG, QUIT BEING A WEINER AND BE A PARENT!
