changing the grading system

Published Jun. 8, 2008

While taking a break from grading papers to read the newspaper, I discovered this article in Friday's N&O.  I'm curious to hear what others think of the Chapel Hill School District's idea.

 *********************************************************************

Schools make 61 the lowest score

Fairness questions arise in Chapel Hill

Meiling Arounnarath, Staff Writer In a move that would make zero a grade of the past, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school district is considering making 61 the lowest grade for a failing assignment.

The goal would be to assure that a single test-day disaster doesn't ruin a semester. Some teachers, students and parents say the change would coddle failing students.

"The system for years had talked about raising expectations for all children in the district, and I don't feel that demonstrates raised expectations for everybody," said Beth Ann Ghio, whose son is an East Chapel Hill High junior. "I don't think that's fair for children who actually submit the work -- even if it's not passing quality -- that they receive the same grade as a student who doesn't submit anything."

Sherri Martin, the district's director of high school programming, said the revised policy would increase consistency throughout the schools within the district, and ensure that students' grades truly reflect their efforts and understanding.

"There is little or no evidence that repeated failure makes people more responsible," Martin said at the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Board of Education meeting Thursday night. "The threat of a low grade is more likely to motivate high-achieving students than low-achieving students."

Homework would not count for more than 20 percent of the quarterly grade, according to the proposal. Other proposed revisions include giving students more time to make up incomplete assignments while offering more support strategies, making it easier for them to pass.

"Students [would] have a chance to recover," Martin said. "Getting a bad grade or having a bad day does not mean you are a failure. This is about hope."

Elsbeth Grant, a junior at East Chapel Hill High School, said the board members are meddling.

"It's not fair to limit teachers and how they should be able to grade," Grant said. "It seems they would know better than the school board what's going on in the individual classes.

"If you're getting an F in class, you're probably not putting that much effort into it anyways. So a 61 seems like you're just getting rewarded for not putting in much effort."

At Thursday night's board meeting, several parents asked the board to postpone the idea until the 2009-2010 school year.

Superintendent Neil Pedersen agreed. But he said, "I would urge that we not simply put this off and that we study this all of next year. I think we mislead ourselves when we think this is an exact science."

Frank McBride, 14, an eighth-grader at Phillips Middle School, said the new grading policy "would be exploited greatly by students. Students are very intelligent and would use that opportunity for escaping work."

Chris Gelpi, parent of two students in the district, said the integrity of the grading system in the district would be compromised. Students would get credit for knowledge not earned. "It seems it closes the achievement gap through an accounting trick," he said.

School board member Jean Hamilton and several colleagues agreed that the board needs to take its time with the policy and get more feedback from teachers and parents.

"I want us to really get at the deeper cultural issues ... and at why students are failing," Hamilton said. "The grade is a signal for what that student has mastered. ... Having a 61 floor is providing a disservice to our students."

Just push the kids along that don't care. That's what we are talking about here. When your in the ninth grade and having problems spelling your name it's a big problem for all involved. Let's go back to the short bus system. For teachers as well as students.

Amen, Grumpy-Not!!

I find the textbook's tests are often poorly written. I write my own tests, and afterwards, go over them with the students. I use their comments to help rewrite any questions that they found confusing.

I don't see lowering standards but I did take a course at UNCW about testing and it said that if over 50% of the students got the question wrong it should be taken out of the test and not counted as it was either written poorly or was not taught correctly. I am of the belief that testing is not only for students but for teachers. If your students are doing poorly on your tests that should wake you up to the fact that you either don't know how to create tests or you are not teaching effectively.

I didn't get past the first 5 lines or so....... this looks like just more of the homogenization of the cream of the crop and the skim milk..... more mediocrity.

IMO I dont understand them wanting to give grades to kids who just wont try or care to try. The kids who are there striving for grades and giving it their best wont have anything to work towards because they will feel it isnt fair, and I cant blame them. When these kids get out into the real world what are they going to be given? They need to realize not everything is going to be handed to them on a silver platter just because they are too lazy or dont care enough to try. Just like with finals. IMO they shouldnt be allowed to take finals over if they havent tried all year, making bad grades and need the class to pass. If they didnt care all year about passing why give them the opportunity to keep trying til they get it right? The students who did try and succeded in passing should be the ones to continue for their endeavors. We coddle the kids too much as to them getting their way instead of it being the right way. We are setting bad examples to those who try as well as those who dont.

I actually had students comment, "Oh, good, we get to DO something in class today!"

My first principal was a firm believer of teaching 180 days and made no bones about it.

A friend of mine in another county told me that her grades were due the day after Memorial Day even though the last day is June 10 for her.

Hawk_fan is dead on: that is a leadership issue.

That's unfortunate because the last two weeks is a great time to start teaching some of the basic skills the students will use next year. Nothing too intense, but just a general introduction to the content.

"All my daughter did for the last two weeks was watch videos and have "free time" in computer lab!"

A good principal would put a stop to all of that. It's practices like those that end up giving all teachers a bad name. I can see showing a movie that is related to what I teach -- but I went into a classroom where the kids were watching "Cars." Grrr...

hawk_fan, you hit the nail on the head. All my daughter did for the last two weeks was watch videos and have "free time" in computer lab!
