d-day weekend: first time at the wwii memorial
Published Jun 6, 2008Views: 138
I would imagine most folks, given a forecast of torrid heat and oppressive humidity, might consider spending less time outside this weekend.
Not me.
Actually, I'll be spending most of Saturday out and about in the aforementioned heat. It is for good reason, though. My grandfather, who is now in his late-80s, served in the US Army during World War II, including multitple tours of duty. Among other things, he spent a great deal of time in London during the many rounds of bombings.
He, my dad, and I -- along with my brother, if he can get off of work -- will make the trek to Washington, DC, this (D-day) evening. Our plan is to spend most of Saturday seeing the various monuments and memorials, first and foremost of which is the newly-built World War II Memorial.
Naturally, this will be a great time for us to spend some time together, doing a little of what my mom calls "male bonding." Beyond that, though, I'm not sure what to expect. Grandpa doesn't talk much about his time overseas -- I wonder if we'll get a heavy (and welcome) dose of grandfatherly war-stories.
In any event, I'm greatly looking forward to the trip.
