well. someone might like to know this information...

Not ten minutes ago I had a woman in front of me who made me cry.

Two wonderful days in a row.

I'm sorry but if you come up here already having an attitude, I am not gonna make much small talk with you.  I don't like confrontation [had enough of that as a kid], so I am going to be as silent as possible.

If you don't like it, tough.  I will not chance provoking you into lashing out at me.

As it happens, I knocked something over on my desk and rolled my eyes at it.  It was the 'holy freaking cow I am so tired of knocking that thing over on my freaking keyboard AGAIN' eyeroll...and I think the lady thought I was rolling my eyes at her...which I most definitely was NOT.

We concluded our business and she points a finger at me and I was instantly a child again.  "Now let me tell you somethin," she says "I did not like your attitude...but I'm not gonna report you.  Let me tell you why:  I got daughters and I'm really just tryin to work right now.  I'm not gonna report you but somebody else will..." etc.

I did not do a thing to this lady to be treated this way...not a THING.  I told my supervisor about it and she said 'well, just smile more.'  WTF...I was smiling!!  Well, until she let loose on me...

I don't know what to do...I can't be all bubbly to everyone, I don't have that personality...it's not in my GENES.

I am kind of upset right now.  I just wanted to put this out there because I know there was someone out there yesterday who told me to 'quit crying' and basically to stfu....

but  I don't have to.

I agree Rocking. I have never had a customer angry with me. I have been in CS for 8 years. My customers know I go all out for them. Even when I am giving bad news they know I hate doing it and they always tell me I know you are doing the best that you can.

Dandyjen: Two responses to remember for next time. One is to start laughing hysterically and scream: "That is the funniest gd thing anyone has said to me yet today!" The other is to lay your head on your desk and start sobbing uncontrollably saying "Nobody likes me! Boo Hoo Hoo!"

"Just remember 90% of the time you cant make customers happy no matter what you do!"

Wow! I have to disagree with this statement. Every job I have had since I was 16 was some form of customer service and I could probably count on 1 hand w/fingers left over how many customers walked away unhappy with me. The first step to good customer service is to be engaged and LISTEN to the customer. Whether or not you can provide them what they seek, if you LISTEN to them and explain why not (if not), they generally understand.

Perception is HUGE when dealing with others. I tell my kids constantly, "You may not have SAID ________, but what did it sound like to the other person? Did they think it sounded like __________? If yes, then you should be more clear or not speak." This conversation takes place after my kids have irritated each other and they begin mumbling under their breath.

im with oldshool...its not worth it.

Figures, every day society thinks everything is ALL about them. I say too bad this "lady" doesn't have a sense of humor. Like yesterday, I pulled onto a street and a car was 1/4 mile away. She gets right up on my bumper so I slow down to a crawl. When we got to a stop sign and she went right and I went left, she rolls down her window and screams at me not to pull out in front of her again. I waved at her. Well wouldn't you know I saw her again this morning and let her go by me, as she did she looked over to see if it was me and I waved again. Just seems to me people are just way to touchy and take everything personally. SMILE AND WAVE, SMILE AND WAVE!!

Never give anyone the power to ruin your day.

"Instead I made it a game to see if I could get a smile. And I WON!"

thats one of the funnest games to win right there...

Thats the best part of being in customer service, I feel your pain. Just remember 90% of the time you cant make customers happy no matter what you do!

slick rick, that does help, If you make it a game, you don't tend to stress as much. Working with the public can give Mother Teresa a migraine. We took a trip to Georgia over the weekend and stopped off at a restuarant on the way home. The waitress and cook were pretty snarly when we went in so I made up my mind to get a smile out of them before I left. I complimented them on little things, etc. The waitress was pretty easy but the cook,,well, he was a tough nut. Finally, as I was leaving, I complimented the cook on the great meal (really wasn't all that great but hey, what did it hurt me to say) and told him that he made my trip a little easier. He gave me a great big smile and said with a very surprised sounding "thanks!". I had no idea why the waitress and cook were in bad moods, other than it was 110 in the shade and they were working but I could have been rude back. Instead I made it a game to see if I could get a smile. And I WON!

as someone else said, perception is indeed everything... I was just saying the same thing on another blog about people think they're all knowing and can read the hearts, minds and intents of others, when they're in fact still pretty confused about themselves....

It'll be all right.
