well. someone might like to know this information...
Published Jun. 5, 2008Not ten minutes ago I had a woman in front of me who made me cry.
Two wonderful days in a row.
I'm sorry but if you come up here already having an attitude, I am not gonna make much small talk with you. I don't like confrontation [had enough of that as a kid], so I am going to be as silent as possible.
If you don't like it, tough. I will not chance provoking you into lashing out at me.
As it happens, I knocked something over on my desk and rolled my eyes at it. It was the 'holy freaking cow I am so tired of knocking that thing over on my freaking keyboard AGAIN' eyeroll...and I think the lady thought I was rolling my eyes at her...which I most definitely was NOT.
We concluded our business and she points a finger at me and I was instantly a child again. "Now let me tell you somethin," she says "I did not like your attitude...but I'm not gonna report you. Let me tell you why: I got daughters and I'm really just tryin to work right now. I'm not gonna report you but somebody else will..." etc.
I did not do a thing to this lady to be treated this way...not a THING. I told my supervisor about it and she said 'well, just smile more.' WTF...I was smiling!! Well, until she let loose on me...
I don't know what to do...I can't be all bubbly to everyone, I don't have that personality...it's not in my GENES.
I am kind of upset right now. I just wanted to put this out there because I know there was someone out there yesterday who told me to 'quit crying' and basically to stfu....
but I don't have to.

Wow! I have to disagree with this statement. Every job I have had since I was 16 was some form of customer service and I could probably count on 1 hand w/fingers left over how many customers walked away unhappy with me. The first step to good customer service is to be engaged and LISTEN to the customer. Whether or not you can provide them what they seek, if you LISTEN to them and explain why not (if not), they generally understand.
Perception is HUGE when dealing with others. I tell my kids constantly, "You may not have SAID ________, but what did it sound like to the other person? Did they think it sounded like __________? If yes, then you should be more clear or not speak." This conversation takes place after my kids have irritated each other and they begin mumbling under their breath.
