Official: Storm kills at least 1 in Minnesota

HUGO, Minn. — Severe thunderstorms packing large hail and possible tornadoes rumbled across the nation's midsection on Sunday, killing at least one person, injuring at least eight others and damaging dozens of homes.

At least 20 people were unaccounted for after a swift storm blew through the St. Paul suburb of Hugo, damaging about four dozen homes, City Administrator Mike Ericson said. Many of them could be out of town for the holiday weekend, he said.

A 2-year-old child was killed and the child's sibling was critically injured and taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Washington County Sheriff Bill Hutton said. The children's parents also were hospitalized with injuries sustained in the family home.

"It's horrible," Ericson said. "The citizens are very shook and scared."

Residents reported a tornado touching down in the area, but that hadn't been confirmed by the National Weather Service.

Emergency crews descended on the town to look for those who hadn't been accounted for and to assess the damage.

About 300 or 400 homes were evacuated in the storm-damaged area because of concerns over hazards including downed power lines and leaky gas lines, Ericson said. The city set up a shelter at an elementary school for those displaced.

Hugo Public Works Director Chris Petree said his family took shelter in the basement before the storm lifted his house off the ground and completely wiped out the second floor.

"I put my daughter down first, my wife on top of her and then I bear-hugged on top of them," Petree said.

As he huddled in his basement against a foundation wall with his wife and 2 1/2-year-old daughter, Petree said they heard the thunderous sound of their house coming off the ground.

"All you hear is glass breaking and wood tearing and breaking in half," Petree said.

In northeastern Iowa, at least six people were injured, one critically, when a possible tornado touched down Sunday near Parkersburg, authorities said.

Jim Waterbury, a spokesman for Allen Hospital in Waterloo, said people came from nearby Grundy Center, Aplington and Eldora for treatment of mild to moderate injuries.

"It looks like most of them are fractures and broken collarbones," Waterbury said. "One is in critical condition."

Officials opened Parkersburg's elementary school for evacuees.

A possible tornado also struck the nearby town of Dunkerton, with reports of structures damaged in both cities and in rural Black Hawk County.

Power lines have also been knocked down in the area, leaving many residents without power.

About 100 people have died in U.S. twisters so far this year, the worst toll in a decade, according to the weather service, and the danger has not passed yet. Tornado season typically peaks in the spring and early summer, then again in the late fall.

I know there are many of you on GOLO who are from the Midwest. One of the towns where I lived was hit hard by a tornado today. My stomach is sick; I heard there are fatalities. I'm waiting anxiously to hear from my sister's family whose town is nearby.

Grumpy-not, thanks! By midnight I had heard from all family members. Now I'm waiting to hear how my co-workers and some former students are doing.

Hawk I hope that you find that your family are all ok.

"I've noticed that my mom has quit asking me when I am going to move back!"

LOL! LOL! LOL!!!!!

Mine has too. I just figured she didn't want me back... ;)

Honestly, I don't know if I could ever go back to those winters. My husband says that he will move there but it's on the contingency(sp?) that he gets a snowblower! :)

I have a feeling there will be much more to see when the sun comes up on Monday. They evacuated the whole town tonight so they can do a building by building search and assess the damage.

What a crazy spring the Midwest has had. The winter was amazingly cold and snowy; then came the floods, and now tornadoes. I've noticed that my mom has quit asking me when I am going to move back!

Link to C o on Rapids tordado. This isn't even that bad--I can't imagine that town in Iowa.

I think emergency officials cleared everyone out to a safe place. (Most parks in that have a shelter area.) Then the sirens went off.

There were some storm chasers filming this tornado, too. The highway patrol stopped them twice, but they kept going. The last thing that I would want to do is chase a tornado! I teach middle school -- I get enough adventures in my life. :-)

I think we might have gone through here on our last trip back from MN. We took 35W South out of MN instead of going through WI. I'll have to look at a map.

"An RV park in another town got hit. (Everybody evacuated so only the vehicles were hurt.) This will be a Memorial Day to remember in that area for a while."

Do you think that's because they had a tornado SIREN? It amazes me that Parks down here don't have them. It was only a few years ago, if that, that those people were killed during the night because there wasn't any warning.

They have photos on WHO-TV's web site. You can see the water tower and everything else looks like sticks on the ground.

I think this is going to be a wild year in the Midwest. A few years ago it was crazy around this region here with hurricanes, now it's somewhere else's turn. We plan on going back to visit this summer.

You did lose some of your history because even if they do rebuild the high school it won't be the same.
