please drive safely... if not for yourselves... for those around you

Published May. 25, 2008

In response to slick rick da rula's blog "accident on inner beltline kills three and wounds three"... I wanted to recall attention to some facts here.

1) the victims in this accident were, according to the WRAL story, also hispanic.

And this is my point:  it doesn't matter what race/creed/gender etc you are from... life is TOO precious and delicate to be snuffed out by some careless act as this.

2) I was one of the first on the scene of another later noon-time accident on I-440 just about a mile and a half down from the aforementioned early morning crash today.  Some stupid driver flew by us and then shot out around the curve ahead just after Wake Forest Rd headed toward Six Forks.  As we rounded the curve, we observed cars skidding/smoking and weaving to a stop.  One car ended up hitting the center median... hard, head on.

The speeding convertable corvette driver who blew past us and "allegedly" caused this injury accident before darting away from the scene was some middle aged dark haired white guy, the victims in this crash were, yes... hispanic.  And they happened to be very nice folks, too, I might add... for those of you quick to villainize by blanket comments.

So, wanna throw some stereotypes out there?  RALEIGH DRIVERS ARE ALMOST ALL CRAZY OR INEPT.  There... I said it.  Im an equal opportunity offender now.

I've lived many places in my life.  I've called Raleigh home for 14yrs.  Only in the past 8-10 yrs have I noticed a general downward spiral in collective driving skill of the common commuters in this area.

One constant remains:  SPEED.  Why the #$%& must drivers feel the need to drive FASTER no matter the conditions about them?  Weather, backups, pedestrians, workzones, roadside police activity... folks just DON'T CARE.  They plow through unwhittingly.

So... to all the choir members out there... Thanks for taking it easy.  For everyone else... PLEASE slow down.  While your life may not be important to you, the lives of others are to them and their families.

"1) the victims in this accident were, according to the WRAL story, also hispanic."

dude, I hear ya, the drunk driving illegals kill anyone, regardless of where they came from.

"RALEIGH DRIVERS ARE ALMOST ALL CRAZY OR INEPT. "

I think this is at least partially due to the fact that Raleigh has had so many people move here from so many different areas recently, and along with their furniture and other possessions, these people have also brought in a hodge podge of various (oftentimes incompatible) driving styles from all over the country.

I can get by in any traffic. I expect bad driving from others and it makes my travel less irritating. After you drive in Manhattan, driving down here is easy.

"When you're over 60 miles per hour, you get slowed down by wind resistance, and then fuel efficiency does depend on the shape of your car," says Chris Kielich, a spokeswoman for the Department of Energy. http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/SavingandDebt/SaveonaCar/Americas10CostliestCommutes.aspx

US drivers have insufficient training. The other thing is that too many people treat driving as a right, it is not, it is a privilege and should be treated as such. If someone is caught driving without a license it should be mandatory jail time, with the amount of time increasing each time they get caught.

It's not just around the Triangle..it's everywhere. People with a cell phone grafted to their ear and pizzed because they can't add at least 15 miles per hour to the posted speed limit....It's a war zone out on our roads.

Your title says it all. That's really what we all should be doing...driving safely. People are in a hurry or thing selfishly and are likely to cause accidents. There are worse places than Raleigh to drive but people of that area sure could stand to take a safe driving course. Maybe that should be mandatory to renew your liscense.

"I stay away from Raleigh traffic. I don't even really like driving to Cary."

Cary's worse (especially the Crossroads area), they have the rudest drivers I've ever seen.

Raleigh is a toxic driving environment for me - I don't go there unless I am absolutely forced to. Part of it is because the drivers are so aggressive, another because I KNOW I don't know where to go and don't want to be the cause of an accident.

The I-drive-by-looking-one-car-length-ahead drivers kill me, but first tailgating, then repeatedly switching lanes by swearing/threading the needle.

Those VIP types who stay in the lane knowing two are becoming one, going by dozens of cars in line, only to push their way in line, thus slowing the speed of those already in line, those, they bother me, but don't kill me.

The distracted cell phone talkers, singing and dancing to the music, putting on make-up, and reading job papers are killer too.

Now and again I wear the black hat, do something stupid or discourteous, and become the driver I dislike. I thank the good drivers who put up with me then, and save me sometimes too.

FE, I agree. I, too, felt MUCH safer on the autobahn in southern Bavaria than I do here.
