mr. conservative senator no
Published May. 22, 2008I miss Jesse. His editorials were one of the reasons WRAL became the most watched televison station in our home. You could always count on insight into a topical problem or situation when Jesse Helms turned his attention to it. Like a surgeon using a scapel, Jesse would turn his intellect onto a social ill, a blemish on society and after examining it, twisting it back and forth , he would pry it forth and fling it away. If only we had editorialists like him in this day and time. Helms could attack a problem in his nightly editorials on WRAL without using foul language and raising his voice. He came across as a gentleman at all times and whether you agreed with him or not, and I usually did agree with him, however you felt about the situation, you had to admit that he was brilliant in his critques and so very wise in the down and dirty world of American politics.
It would be so revealing to have access to those old editorials. Not just cherry picked ones that would agree with todays politically correct crowd, but vintage Jesse. Like when he referred to the 1964 Civil Rights Act as the "the single most dangerous piece of legislation ever introduced in Congress." He then he explained his discomfort at the legislation with, "It was taking liberties away from one group and giving them to another. I thought it was bad legislation then and I have had nothing to change my mind about it."
Like I said before, whether you agreed or not with Jesse, he was one to sit and listen to and marvel at his take on things. I'll always love Jesse and the nation should always remember this icon on conservatism who sprang from North Carolina yet changed the face of American politics forever. God Bless America, and God Bless Jesse Helms.

Let us not forget that the Democratic party was founded in 1868 with the sole purpose of making sure that blacks never achieved equality in the US. Once could argue that The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was their greatest contribution toward that goal.

Well it all depends on what your definition of bigotry is. Kinda like Bill Clinton said, "It all depends on what the meaning of is, is."
